At the three-person dining table.
Sienna was in absolute agony.
To make matters worse, the two men were sitting directly across from each other.
With every extra glance Nathaniel threw at Jorrod, her heart beat a fraction faster.
Beneath the table, Sienna's good leg was bouncing anxiously, completely out of her control.
Jorrod pressed his palm over her thigh, gently pushing it down.
A moment later, her leg started bouncing like a jackhammer again.
Jorrod pressed it down once more.
She finally gave up, clamped her knees together, and sat up perfectly straight like a well-behaved student in class.
Maybe it was because he wasn't wearing his glasses, or because he wasn't very familiar with Nathaniel. More importantly, the idea of Jorrod Vaughn casually hanging out in her apartment was so absurd that Sienna was certain Nathaniel hadn't actually figured out who he was yet.
But his questions were coming one after the other, each sharper than the last.
"What do you do for a living, man?"
"How did you manage to win Sienna over?"
"You guys have a great relationship. I'm so jealous."
Jorrod silently placed food on Sienna's plate, completely ignoring all of Nathaniel's questions.
It wasn't until Nathaniel smiled brightly and said, "You definitely have to invite me to the wedding."
Sienna couldn't take it anymore. She gritted her teeth. "Nathaniel! Are you writing his biography?"
Nathaniel just flashed a harmless smile. "He just seems like such a great guy. I feel like we hit it off, so I couldn't help asking a few more questions."
Jorrod covered the woman's hand on the table with a thoroughly possessive posture. A faint smile finally touched his lips, though his eyes were brimming with clear hostility.
He said, "We'll definitely invite you to our wedding."
Caught in the crossfire, Sienna was about to explode.
What wedding? If they kept talking, she was going to pass out right here.
When the doorbell rang, she was so excited she almost leaped to her feet.
"Elara is here!"
Jorrod pressed her gently back into her seat, his voice low. "I'll get it."
Elara had seen a lot in her time.
Walking into the living room and sensing the absolute battlefield, it took her exactly three seconds to assess the situation.
Especially when Sienna shot her a frantic look and mouthed, "My Mr. Carter."
She understood instantly.
Elara pressed her lips together, holding back an amused smile, and took the seat next to Nathaniel.
Sienna's scalp prickled. She grabbed a dinner roll from the plate next to her and shoved it directly into Nathaniel's hand, ensuring everyone got the same treatment.
"You eat up, too! Focus on your food and stop talking!"
-
The two guests stayed until late into the evening.
After they left, Sienna finally let out a massive breath, releasing the tension that had gripped her nerves all day.
Now that they were alone, Jorrod reached out to pull her into his arms.
But she pushed him away. She hobbled over to the bed, sat down, and leaned heavily against the edge, refusing to look at him.
The woman on the bed didn't look happy.
Part of it was the sheer exhaustion of acting all day, but the other part was genuine anger at him for acting on his own.
Jorrod pressed his lips together, stepped closer, and crouched in front of her, reaching out to massage her leg.
Sienna pulled her leg back without a shred of mercy. His hand grasped at empty air.
"Jorrod Vaughn, do you have any idea how bad it would have been if Nathaniel recognized you today?"
Jorrod remained crouching, simply looking up at her. "How bad?"
"The consequences would be..." Sienna suddenly faltered.
She didn't know the intricate politics of massive corporations. All she knew was that Silas Lester had warned her repeatedly that no one could ever find out about Jorrod's illness, or the fallout would be disastrous. She was just following orders.
