Perhaps it was the adrenaline, or the fact that their intimate interactions had lasted late into the night.
The two slept right through until seven in the morning.
Sienna jolted awake only when the doorbell rang.
Crap! She completely forgot to coordinate a pickup time with Silas Lester!
Jorrod was clearly much more relaxed. His arm was wrapped tightly around her slender waist as he nuzzled affectionately against her arm.
"Wake up, Jorrod! Silas is here to pick you up!"
Hearing that, the man slowly opened his eyes, a flicker of nervous panic crossing his gaze. "Did you change your mind?"
"No, no, no," Sienna quickly explained. "I just forgot to tell him."
Jorrod paused, then sat up and gently pressed his disheveled girlfriend back down into the blankets.
"You rest. I'll get the door."
Jorrod's pajamas were some cheap bargain bin find Sienna had picked up from the supermarket.
They had probably been sitting in warehouse inventory for years, and the fabric was far from sturdy.
Last night, in a fit of sudden passion, Sienna had yanked at his collar and popped off several buttons.
Jorrod tried to button it back up as he walked.
By the time he reached the door, he had only managed to secure it halfway up his chest.
When the door opened, Silas was immediately greeted by the sight of his friend's dramatically exposed chest.
"Well, well, well, look who's finally up. Did the sun rise in the west today?"
Silas whistled, but his teasing cut off abruptly. His eyes widened like saucers as they locked onto the hickeys painting his friend's skin.
Dark purple.
Fresh.
And there were a lot of them.
"I knew it, Jorrod! I knew your whole 'aloof ascetic' routine was a complete sham! Tell me, who is she?!"
Right on cue, a woman limped out from the bedroom.
Silas was speechless.
Come to think of it, when they had first bumped into each other, Silas had poked around asking questions. Jorrod’s response had been to dump him on the side of the road and tell him to get his head checked.
Oh, how the tables had turned. Now Jorrod was the one who needed his head checked.
"Your private lives are none of my business. So, are you still coming with me today?"
As Silas fully expected.
He got a flat-out rejection.
Figures.
He always knew it. Why hang out with a grumpy old friend when you have a brand new, soft, beautiful girlfriend?
"Fine." Silas patted his friend's shoulder, suddenly remembering something. "Oh, I forgot to mention. I recently found a specialist—Professor Jacqueline Shaw from the Neurology Department at Northern Medical University Hospital. She’s highly experienced with cases exactly like yours."
Jorrod froze, instinctively asking, "When?"
Silas sighed. "That's the problem. She's completely stopped taking new patients. But don't worry, I'm pulling some strings and working my connections. I'll get her on board so you can recover as quickly as possible."
