Liam hadn't planned on going home, but since he was caught, he stayed for dinner.
The family of three sat around the table in dead silence.
Halfway through the meal, Martha suddenly spoke up. "I don't approve of you and Sienna."
Since they started dating until their breakup, Liam hadn't mentioned a single word about it. He looked up in surprise.
"I saw this coming a long time ago."
Liam lowered his eyes. "We broke up."
Martha paused, then finally smiled. "Good. You worked so hard to get into a top university and land a job at a major corporation. You're young, you should be focusing on your career, not wasting time dating. Even when you do get married, we need to find someone who can elevate your career..."
Realizing they would never see eye to eye, Liam slammed his silverware down. "Mom, stop talking. We're going to get back together."
He stood up, took a few strides to the sofa, grabbed his jacket, and twisted the doorknob, walking out without another word.
Arthur tried to mediate. "Why do you do this? It's rare for our son to come visit, and Sienna is a good girl. Why do you have to speak so harshly about her?"
"No way. We have to stand above the Quinn family. What would it look like if those two ended up together?"
"Compete, compete, compete! You've been competing with them for over twenty years, aren't you exhausted?"
Arthur lost his appetite. He stood up and left the living room.
Left behind, Martha's eyes suddenly welled with tears. "You're the one who can't compete! Our son is different!"

Sienna ended up staying at Jorrod's place for a whole week.
Her schedule perfectly aligned with Liana's, and over time, the two grew close.
During the day, they went to work, and at night, Liana would follow Sienna upstairs like a shadow, snatching her away from Jorrod to monopolize her time.
Liana absolutely adored this new, approachable version of her cousin.
But she loved her beautiful, outgoing new friend even more.
Even the household staff couldn't help but marvel during their shifts that ever since Mr. Vaughn brought Ms. Quinn home, the atmosphere in the villa had become significantly warmer.
But as the days dragged on, no matter how good Jorrod's temper had become, he was growing deeply dissatisfied with the arrangement.
Keeping him at arm's length was supposed to be because of his injured back.
But a week had passed, and the pain was eighty percent gone.
Not to mention, he barely saw her during the day now.
Only at night, when he pulled her into his arms and breathed in her faint, clean scent, could he assure himself that the intimacy of the past few days hadn't been just a fleeting dream.
On the soft, expansive bed, Sienna was completely enveloped in the man's embrace.
The bedroom lights were already off, leaving the room swathed in darkness. The only source of illumination was the small, dim yellow nightlight Sienna had brought over, resting on the nightstand.
Sienna knew he was still awake. "Dr. Evans mentioned he took you through a new recovery therapy session a few days ago?"
The man didn't open his eyes. His voice was muffled as he gave a low "Mhm."
"How did it feel?"
"Not much different. He prescribed some supplementary medication."
"Have you been taking it on time?"
"Mhm."
"Silas told me you've been gradually taking over some of your work at the company again. He said you're basically back to normal?"
Jorrod gave another "Mhm."
After he spoke, the air hung in silence for a few seconds.
Listening to the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock, Sienna spoke softly, "Are the sticky notes all over the house part of the treatment?"
She wasn't just being observant.
The house was literally plastered with sticky notes bearing her name, as if someone was terrified of forgetting.
"No. I just felt like writing them, so I stuck them up."
Sienna continued, "Susan said you used to work so hard you'd forget to eat and sleep. Maybe that constant physical exhaustion is why your memory became so fragile."
