"Nathaniel, you clearly learned plenty from your family's empire."
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow.
Waiting for the inevitable punchline.
Jorrod placed his glass back down on the table, casting him a freezing glare. "At your age, how could you be so utterly obsessed with stealing what belongs to someone else?"
Nathaniel scoffed and broke into a full-blown laugh.
All those hoops just to deliver that insult.
So this was what it was all about.
"Wow, Mr. Vaughn. Are you accusing me of stealing something that belongs to you?"
"And more importantly, did you even have anything worth keeping in the first place?"
Nathaniel stared down into the older man's ruthlessly sharp eyes.
Jorrod's expression turned pitch black.
In the suffocating silence,
neither man looked away.
There was no screaming, no physical violence—just a dead, terrifyingly calm staredown that made the air in the room so dense and violently tense that Jacqueline was left completely bewildered and sweating.
Weren't these two boys close friends?
What was all this talk about stealing and being blind?
Jacqueline began to suspect that she was the one who was actually blind.
She slipped the glasses hanging from her neck onto her face, darting her eyes between the two men.
And still couldn't understand a single thing.
"Ahem, Nate, why don't you sit down and have a bite?"
Nathaniel finally tore his gaze away, his tone instantly snapping back to a cheerful pitch. "No thanks, Jacqueline. I'm saving my appetite for the dumplings Mr. Vaughn graciously tossed my way."
See, he was offering him dumplings! She had definitely overthought the tension.
Jacqueline pushed her glasses up her nose and breathed a massive sigh of relief.
She had honestly thought the two boys were about to tear each other's throats out.

The blinding heat of the midday sun blazed through the windshield.
After leaving the restaurant, Nathaniel hadn't returned to the office. He simply reclined in the driver's seat, leaning back comfortably in the sun, eyes half-closed as he sat there for a long time.
Suddenly, his phone rang.
He answered with a casual, "Hello?"
