Resolving himself, he suddenly reached out and pulled the chattering woman into a crushing embrace. He buried his chin in the crook of her neck, holding her so tight it was as if he wanted to fuse her into his very bones.
Sienna's vocal cords short-circuited on the spot.
She froze.
"I'm sorry," he rasped, his voice rough.
Sienna, who had been fully prepared to shove him away, felt her batteries yanked out completely.
"I-I-I-I-I'm sorry???"
The words "I'm sorry" actually existed in Jorrod's dictionary?!
For once, she didn't fight back, merely stammering, "You..."
His low, magnetic voice rumbled right against her ear, the sound vibrating through her bones with striking clarity and warmth.
"I'm sorry, Darling. I have no intention of going back on my word. I'm just... a little disoriented. I'm not making excuses. Since I've already taken liberties, I will absolutely take responsibility for you."
Sienna felt like her brain was being repeatedly blasted by a cannon.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
Responsibility? Darling?!
What the hell did he mean by liberties?!
He just borrowed a bed! Why was he talking like he had ruined her virtue!
"Uh... there's no need to be so dramatic. Don't you think 'responsibility' is a bit of an exaggeration..."
"But I want to, Darling. I want this. Don't you?"
The man's words were laced with deep insecurity, even carrying a hint of resentment, as if blaming her for not taking their bond seriously.
Sienna's mouth twitched violently.
Don't want it? How could she not want it?
She had suffered through a miserable night on the sofa, calling him 'Mr. Vaughn' left and right, practically worshipping him like an emperor.
All for the sake of that hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar mattress, all so she could upgrade her life in style!
She blurted out, "Fine, take responsibility! But can you please stop calling me Darling? It makes my skin crawl."
It was deeply uncomfortable, awkward, and downright terrifying.
It felt like he was buttering her up before sicking his lawyers on her.
Jorrod pulled back. His dark eyes swirled with an affectionate intensity that Sienna couldn't begin to comprehend.
Staring at her, he raised his hand.
His fingertips brushed the shell of her ear. The movement was clumsy but heartbreakingly gentle as he tucked a messy strand of hair behind her ear.
The second his long fingers grazed her earlobe, a faint current of electricity shot down her neck and straight down her spine.
Half of Sienna's body went completely numb.
She gasped, frowned, and swiftly grabbed his warm, broad hand.
