Jorrod lifted his eyes, staring directly at him. "...tells me that your judgment of beauty peaks at absolute mediocrity."
Every single person in the room instantly turned to look at Liam's outfit.
He was wearing a loose jacket and slightly wrinkled pants. It was the kind of comfortable, casual outfit someone threw on without thinking. It wasn't overly sloppy, but it was far from professional.
Liam pressed his lips together and accepted the blow. "I apologize, Mr. Vaughn. I'll pay closer attention to the dress code in the future. It's just that this was a birthday gift from my former girlfriend, so I've gotten used to wearing it."
"This isn't about dress codes," Jorrod cut him off sharply. "In a design firm, you need an acute aesthetic judgment. If you can't even bother to dress yourself properly, I find it incredibly hard to believe you possess the 'rigorous standards' you brag about."
Objectively, Jorrod made a fair point. But spending this much time delivering a brutal lecture over one employee's casual attire felt excessively harsh.
"Furthermore." Jorrod's gaze was coated in pure ice as it bore down on him. "This is a workplace. We are in a professional meeting. Watch your mouth and read the room. No one here wants to hear about your damn ex-girlfriend."
Liam jerked his head up, meeting Jorrod's eyes for a fleeting second before quickly looking away.
He hadn't said she was his ex-girlfriend...
Moreover, that look wasn't just cold professionalism anymore. It was laced with something dark and entirely incomprehensible... hostility?
Impossible. Liam quickly pushed the absurd thought away. This was his first face-to-face interaction with Jorrod. Why would the CEO have any personal vendetta against him?
"Next," Jorrod commanded coldly.
The entire meeting concluded without a single viable proposal, leaving everyone deeply rattled.
Rowan, a member of The Design Department, had gone to college with Silas Lester. Compared to the terrifying Mr. Vaughn, Silas was infinitely more approachable.
He quietly vented his frustration to his old friend. "Mr. Vaughn is ruthless. Going after a guy's clothes? Thank god I have a date tonight and actually dressed decently."
