Jorrod's words from months ago suddenly echoed in her ears.
Sienna froze for a moment.
So, this was the replacement book Jorrod had bought her.
But where was the old one? The one covered in tape. She remembered it clearly; she couldn't be mistaken.
"Could it be another Sienna in the company? But they said..." the young intern muttered, pulling Sienna from her thoughts.
"Never mind," Sienna said. "I remembered wrong. This one is mine, you can take it back to read."
"Okay, thank you so much, Sienna."
The first thing Sienna did when she got home was dig through the stack of books on her desk.
Sure enough, she pulled out the old, heavily taped book she remembered.
It was definitely hers. The inner pages still had a faint soup stain from a messy lunch at her old job.
Her gaze shifted to the edge of the desk, and she picked up the roll of clear tape.
Pinching it, she noticed it felt thinner than a few days ago, and the edge had the distinct, clean cut of a blade.
A sudden thought flashed through her mind.
Sienna marched into the bathroom, yanked down the fluffy white towel hanging on the rack, and checked the small tag sewn into the corner.
No wonder it felt strange that day—it had the pristine softness of a brand-new towel.
It wasn't her original towel at all.
Sienna immediately dialed Mindy Monroe, skipping the pleasantries. "Mindy, tell me the truth. Was it Jorrod who brought me home that night?"
Mindy was caught off guard.
She didn't expect a follow-up interrogation.
She wanted to deny it, but before the words left her mouth, she sensed something was off.
It didn't sound like a test; Sienna genuinely seemed completely in the dark, which explained the repeated questioning.
