[Your breakfast smells amazing. It made the whole office jealous. I almost don't want to eat it.]
[I made it just for you. If you like it, I'll make it for you every day.]
[Even if you made it every day, I'd still never want to finish it.]
The chat history replayed over and over in his mind, etched so deeply he could recite it backward.
In his vision, the surroundings blurred into indistinct shadows, leaving only the paper bag in the trash can sharply in focus.
That bag held the breakfast he had made—his first time ever stepping into a kitchen, slaving away since the early hours of the morning. The seal hadn't even been broken. It had simply been tossed out with the rest of the garbage.
It felt like a bucket of ice water had been hurled at him out of nowhere, leaving him completely defenseless.
His Adam's apple bobbed. Jorrod lowered his eyes, the corner of his lips twitching slightly.
His outstretched hand continued its motion, casually tying the trash bag shut.
He closed his eyes and leaned back against the chair.
The burn on his back throbbed beneath the thick gauze, a dull, relentless pain that made him break out in a cold sweat. Yet, he felt the physical agony paled in comparison to the sharp sting of what he had just seen.
When Sienna emerged from the room, the first thing she noticed was the trash can by the table.
She had forgotten to take it out that morning.
She hurried over, tightly knotting the bag and lining the bin with a fresh one.
Jorrod opened his eyes, his gaze dropping to her. He stared at the top of her head for a few seconds as she busied herself on the floor before suddenly speaking. "That breakfast the other day..."
Sienna froze. She looked up, crashing straight into the man's deep, fathomless eyes.
They were like a stagnant pool, completely devoid of ripples.
Jorrod didn't even know why he was pretending not to know, why he had even brought it up.
He knew it was meaningless. He knew he had no right to ask. In the past, he wouldn't have even bothered to waste a single thought on something so beneath him. It was a question unworthy of his internal turmoil.
