Every decision Jorrod made was always backed by meticulous calculation.
He hated acting on impulse. Spontaneity bred variables, and variables led to uncontrollable outcomes.
Yet here he was, driving the car straight into the unknown.
He had no idea what was going through his head.
The only thing consuming his mind was a single, deafening demand.
See her. See her now.
Right now. This exact second.
The car tore through the city streets, eventually slowing as it pulled into Sycamore Grove and parked beneath her dilapidated apartment building.
The stench of the damp, pitch-black stairwell hit him the moment he stepped inside.
For the first time, Jorrod climbed the crumbling stairs completely alone. The motion-sensor lights flickered to life one by one behind him as his dress shoes echoed against the concrete. After navigating several narrow landings, he finally came to a stop in front of her familiar security door.
Sienna had just finished washing her face and was about to climb into bed when she heard the knock.
As she walked into the living room, the knocking sounded again.
It was a steady, measured rhythm, completely lacking the frantic banging the building's sanitation workers usually employed when they needed something.
Besides, it was way too late for anyone from the neighborhood to be visiting.
She didn't unbolt the lock. Instead, she called out through the door, "Who is it?"
"It's me."
The voice was unmistakable, though it was raspier than usual. Sienna froze, then carefully slid open the peephole cover on the door.
Out in the hall, the motion-sensor light had already timed out. Through the small gap, the man's silhouette seemed to bleed into the suffocating darkness, his sharp features obscured by the shadows.
"What are you doing here?" Sienna asked, completely taken aback.
Jorrod didn't answer right away. His fever-heavy eyelids lifted halfway, peering through the grate into her apartment. The lights were on. Sienna was standing in her pajamas, one hand resting on the doorframe, making absolutely no move to unlatch the chain.
"If you're not going to speak, I'm shutting the cover."
