Dr. Sterling was still manning the night shift in the emergency room.
"..."
Dr. Sterling didn't know what to say anymore. Every time he wanted to say something, he held back, intimidated by their status.
He rarely worked night shifts.
Yet they had found their way straight to him with perfect precision.
With the frequency he bumped into this billionaire, he felt like he had the plot armor of a romance novel protagonist.
"The inflammatory response around the wound is significant, there's abnormal discharge, and his temperature..." Dr. Sterling checked the thermometer in his hand. "One hundred and three degrees. That's a high fever. His white blood cell count is definitely off the charts. We'll wait for the blood work."
Sienna spoke with the doctor. "Dr. Sterling, is his condition... serious?"
Dr. Sterling paused his typing.
Was it serious? Repeatedly exposing the burn to water, ignoring medical advice, a hundred-and-three-degree fever, and drinking whenever he felt like it...
It would be a miracle if it weren't serious.
That was the truth, but Dr. Sterling couldn't say it like that. He pushed up his glasses. "Let me put it this way, miss. With his situation, soaking in water every day, even a piece of stainless steel would be rusting by now. What do you think?"
Sienna forced a smile, offering him an awkward but polite expression.
"He doesn't listen to me, but he should listen to his girlfriend." Dr. Sterling turned in his chair to look at her. "Keep a closer eye on him from now on. Getting sick is one thing, but wouldn't it bother you to see an ugly scar on such an otherwise flawless back?"
Sienna frowned, immediately launching into a triple denial. "No, I'm not. He's not my boyfriend. He's just my boss."
Dr. Sterling froze for a second.
He instinctively glanced at the time in the bottom right corner of his computer monitor.
Four in the morning.
