That night, Sienna and Jorrod kept a massive distance between them in bed.
She refused to let him get close, and Jorrod didn't dare cross the line. He just lay there, quietly staring at her back.
Noticing her shoulders shift, realizing she was still awake, he finally spoke in a soft whisper. "Earlier, I wanted to make you something hot."
He was terrified she was still mad at him.
He wanted to explain why he had spilled the water.
"You're so full of yourself," Sienna scoffed without turning around. "Who wants whatever you're making? Do you even know how?"
He actually didn't, but when he saw the pasta in the cabinet and realized the stove turned on with a simple twist, he assumed it was something he used to be good at. He just followed his instincts.
Jorrod thought about it for a moment. "I can learn."
Sienna had heard that exact phrase from him so many times, both before and after his amnesia.
In the dark, cool silence of the bedroom, his deep voice carried a tender, cautious edge. Hearing it now, it sounded softer and gentler than ever before.
She opened her mouth, but ultimately didn't say a word.
When she didn't respond, the man quickly followed up to plead his case.
"You make it hot for me to see, I'll learn, and then I'll make it hot for you."
"..." Sienna didn't know if there was something wrong with the way he phrased it, or if her own mind was just completely in the gutter.
On the bright side, he was definitely talking more.
But the delivery was still fragmented, and the wording sounded incredibly, awkwardly suggestive.
Before she had met Jorrod, she had been a perfectly wholesome, upstanding citizen. How was it that now, she felt like someone had dumped a bucket of dirty paint over her brain, coloring everything with innuendo?
Sienna sighed. "Just stop talking."
"Okay."
"And you are forbidden from entering the kitchen," she added.
"Okay."
The room fell into a long, quiet pause.
Then, from behind her, a hesitant, careful voice whispered, "Are you still angry?"
He spoke with extreme caution, his breathing incredibly light, terrified of setting her off again.
