Sienna's mind went completely blank. Ignoring the puddle soaking into her shoes, she marched forward and immediately yanked up the hem of his shirt.
Seeing that his stomach was soaked but thankfully not scalded red, she pressed her palm flat against his skin. The muscles beneath her hand instantly went rigid. The man stared down at the top of her head, completely frozen.
His skin was hot, but unburned.
Sienna let out a massive breath of relief. She picked up the discarded pot, threw it into the sink, and aggressively twisted the stove off.
But in the exact moment her terror faded, it was instantly replaced by a surging, furious anger.
"Who told you to mess around in here?" Sienna was absolutely livid. "Don't you know this is dangerous?"
Jorrod stood in front of her like a child caught doing something terrible. Listening to her scold him, he didn't try to hide or back away. Instead, he took a step forward and gently grabbed her arm. "Don't be angry."
"How can I not be angry? I leave for five minutes, and what do you do? You nearly burn the place down!"
"No... you didn't eat. You'd be hungry..."
"When did I ever say I was hungry? Is it really any of your..." Sienna's voice suddenly choked in her throat.
Finally, locked in his gaze, she just pressed her lips tightly together, turned on her heel, and marched over to the sofa.
Jorrod was terrified. He followed right behind her like a lost puppy. When she sat on the left, he squeezed in right on her right.
The surge of emotion hit her out of nowhere.
Even after sitting down, she couldn't swallow the heavy, aching lump forming in her throat.
It wasn't that she didn't know why he had gone into the kitchen. Obviously, he was just trying to make her food. But seeing that open flame had sparked pure panic in her chest, and in the heat of the moment, the harsh, cutting words had just spilled out of her mouth.
Jorrod pulled a tissue from the box on the coffee table, cupped her face in his hands, and gently wiped her tears.
"Don't cry," he said softly.
Sienna's emotions had somewhat leveled out by then. She swatted his hands away, her voice softening. "I'm not crying."
The air grew quiet for a few seconds.
She spoke with a calm, flat tone. "You're the one who makes me cry the most, and you still have the nerve to say that."
