The car door clicked shut, instantly blocking out the biting winter wind. The secluded backseat was filled with a comforting warmth that slowly thawed the chill from her cheeks.
Sienna slipped off his coat and handed it back to him.
Jorrod didn't mention the argument he had overheard from the apartment across the hall. Instead, he simply asked, "Is your family close to Liam Carter's family?"
"Why do you ask?" At the mention of Liam, Sienna's first thought was that this man was getting territorial again.
Given his track record, if she so much as touched the car too affectionately, he'd probably grab her hand in annoyance and press it against his own abs instead.
Jorrod said, "I ran into him outside your apartment before. It didn't seem like you were on great terms, but when your dad was in the hospital, Liam's father came to visit him."
Sienna immediately zeroed in on the detail. "How do you know that?"
"The caregivers inside were my people. They naturally reported whatever happened that day to me."
"Oh..." Sienna suddenly remembered the day she had brought the food to the hospital.
She shot Jorrod a slightly guilty look. When their eyes met, he completely understood her silent realization.
"Yes, it wasn't until that evening that I found out the meal wasn't actually meant for me."
"..."
Sienna had to ask the inevitable question. "So how was it? Was it good?"
Jorrod fell silent for two seconds, seemingly searching for the right words. Finally, he replied, "It had a very... unique flavor profile. Quite innovative."
Sienna held up a hand. "Alright, stop right there. You don't have to say another word."
Since she didn't want him to continue, Jorrod obediently dropped the subject and steered the conversation back to Liam.
Sienna thought back.
"It used to be good. When we were little, our families were close. Our parents knew each other and worked at the same factory. Liam and I were in preschool together, so we pretty much grew up side by side..."
Sienna spoke casually, not noticing the slight tightening of the man's jaw in the dim light of the car as she got into the story.
He quickly smoothed out his expression, though the tension in his rigid jawline betrayed an emotion he refused to voice.
"Later on, we moved, so we didn't stay in constant contact, but we kept in touch."
"And what about Liam?" Jorrod suddenly interjected.
Sienna answered honestly. "Liam and I didn't talk much until college, when we realized we had applied to the same university and the same major. It was a nice surprise at first. We were just good friends all through college. It wasn't until a couple of years after graduation that he finally confessed his feelings."
