They timed it perfectly.
They headed downstairs and out the door just before the firework show was set to begin.
George hadn't driven here, and figuring Jorrod Vaughn had traveled a long way, he planned to order two cars on an app so as not to interrupt the young couple's alone time.
Instead, Jorrod led everyone straight to the underground parking garage.
Standing in front of two luxury vehicles, George noted they both looked exactly like the kind of high-end cars fitting Jorrod's status. Unsure, he asked, "Are both of these yours?"
When Jorrod shook his head, George rubbed his chin. That made sense; nobody in their right mind brought two cars just to go out.
Even the wealthy didn't burn money like that.
Unexpectedly, the very next sentence caught him off guard.
"The black one is mine. The white one is for you."
The other three people in the garage stood there with their jaws dropped.
"Mine?" George pointed at himself.
Jorrod stood opposite him and nodded, his tone humble and polite. "Since this is our first official meeting after Sienna and I got together, it wouldn't be right to arrive without a proper greeting gift."
George's mouth hung open. It took him a long time to process the words.
He understood the concept of a greeting gift, but wasn't it usually a nice bottle of wine or some cigars? Who just handed over a brand-new car right out of the gate?
Jorrod took a few long strides around the parking space and handed the car keys to George. Along the way, he casually popped the trunk.
Sienna Quinn followed him, her eyes widening as her gaze landed on the dazzling array of items filling the trunk.
It was packed with exquisite shopping bags from top-tier luxury brands she recognized, mostly containing designer handbags, apparel, and jewelry.
She turned her head to look at her mother.
Lillian Douglas stood frozen in place, barely managing to register that these seemed to be for her.
"The gifts in the trunk are for Mrs. Douglas."
"As for the car, I was worried you might not like it, Mr. Quinn, so I prepared something else as well..."
Jorrod reached into the corner of the trunk, pulled out a wooden box, and handed it to George.
Stunned, George acted purely on instinct, taking the box and opening it.
Deep purple velvet lined the interior, and nestled in the center was The Imperial Jade Signet. It was translucent, radiant, and exuded an aura of profound nobility, leagues beyond the value of that little Sandalwood Gourd.
Yet even that small gourd had felt too heavy and expensive for George to accept.
