Sienna was bewildered, her eyes following the man's deeply distressed gaze.
She froze instantly.
Her skin was naturally sensitive, and Jorrod's grip had been incredibly forceful. Now, stark red welts slashed across her pale wrist, making it look as though she had been severely abused.
But honestly, it wasn't a big deal at all.
Sienna had dated before.
However, the relationship had been short-lived and long-distance. By the time she returned, she discovered he had stolen her designs, leading to a massive, explosive breakup. Throughout that entire relationship, she had rarely been genuinely taken care of. Mostly, it was just cold, detached texting through a screen.
But the man standing in front of her was living, breathing, and overflowing with emotion.
This was the very first time someone had treated a tiny red mark on her skin like a catastrophic injury, gently blowing on it and massaging it as if her life depended on it.
His overwhelming concern and absolute self-blame made it seem like she had suffered a mortal wound.
It didn't hurt in the slightest, but her skin felt like it was on fire.
Feeling incredibly awkward, Sienna pulled her hand back, mumbled an excuse about being late, and practically fled out the door.
Jorrod had indeed become obedient, but his intense reliance, unfiltered adoration, and desperate need to please her always made Sienna feel as though a guillotine was hanging over her neck, threatening to drop at any second.
This time, her trip out coincided with Harvey Miller's day off, and he invited her to dinner.
The atmosphere at home was suffocatingly complicated, so when her friend called, she agreed without a second thought. She also wanted to check if he had managed to fix the broken phone.
As luck would have it, just as they finished eating, Barnaby and Beatrice stopped by to visit their son.
The older couple was absolutely thrilled. They had adored Sienna since she was a little girl, and having not seen her for a while, they were practically bursting with joy.
