Just separated by a single wall.
Jorrod wasn't asleep.
He lay on his side on the large bed where he could finally stretch out completely. The Butterfly Pendant in his hand had already absorbed the heat of his palm, turning warm.
He gripped it tightly, yet with extreme care, as if handling the most fragile, priceless treasure in the world.
She had said this was an incredibly important item to her.
And she had personally placed it around his neck.
Jorrod gently brought it to his lips, closed his eyes, and pressed a deeply reverent kiss against the tiny silver charm.
Ah, little butterfly, could you help him fly just a little bit closer to his Darling?
Tucking the silver charm safely into his palm, he sank into a deeply satisfying slumber...
The next day was Monday.
It was also the day Sienna and Silas had agreed upon for her to report to Stellaris Corp.
Sienna set an early alarm.
After getting ready, she was at the door changing her shoes when Jorrod heard the noise. Having just woken up, he pushed open the guest room door, his eyes still heavy with sleep.
The moment he saw her fully dressed and even changing into her outdoor shoes, he froze.
Every trace of exhaustion vanished in an instant.
He asked anxiously, "Darling, are you leaving?"
Sienna had actually left a note for him, not wanting to wake him up.
But since he was awake, she explained, "Yeah, going to work. Be a good boy and stay home. I'll be back around seven tonight."
His lonely figure lingered by the doorframe, not daring to step forward, as if terrified of annoying her.
Sienna had already put her shoes on, but under that intense, pitiful gaze, her heart softened. She swapped back into her slippers and walked back over to him.
Because of his height, Sienna's line of sight perfectly aligned with his chest. The pendant reflected a faint silver glimmer, swaying gently against the center of his collarbone.
"You're still wearing it."
She stood on her tiptoes, reaching out to take it off, but halfway there, her hand was suddenly intercepted by a large palm.
Out of nowhere, her fingers were captured by Jorrod's long, well-defined fingers.
What should have been a cool touch was now burning hot against her skin.
Like an electric shock, Sienna violently yanked her hand back. Looking thoroughly uncomfortable, she hid her hands behind her back, rubbing the hem of her shirt.
"What?"
Every word of comfort went a long way in calming his anxious heart. Jorrod lowered his head slightly, his pitch-black pupils reflecting a flash of silver. He lifted his hand, and the moment his fingers brushed against it, he seemed a little more at ease.
Having successfully placated him, Sienna grabbed her bag and headed out.
Before she could take more than a few steps, the man rushed out after her, calling out to her back.
"Darling."
She turned around.
"Come back... early."
"I know."
Not long after Sienna left.
The door across the hall swung open, and moments later, shut again.
Inside the apartment.
Martha Carter spoke up suspiciously. "That's weird. Why did I just hear a man yelling 'Darling'? Did that girl bring a boy home?"
Enjoying a rare day off, Arthur Carter leaned back on the couch, watching TV. "The TV is loud, it's loud outside, it's totally normal to mishear things. Can't you see it? Our Liam and her have a special relationship. Maybe next time, Liam will introduce..."
Martha immediately cut him off. "What nonsense are you spouting? Those two have known each other since they were kids, so of course they're close. Our Liam is entirely focused on his career right now, how could he be thinking about dating this early?"
