Xavier studied Gillian's face. She looked incredibly pale, her eyes clouded with anxiety.
No one could remain calm or collected under these circumstances.
The man reached out, gently patting her back in a steady, reassuring manner, trying to lend her his strength.
"Miles knows about this," Xavier said in a low voice. "He's coming over shortly to give your father a thorough medical exam inside."
Gillian shuddered slightly. She looked up at Xavier, opening her mouth to speak, but swallowed the words down.
Xavier offered a comforting smile. "I know you probably want to thank him. It's obvious to everyone that Miles has feelings for you. But you haven't finalized your divorce, and he has a fiancée, so you're trying to keep your distance."
"He's officially getting engaged to Quinn Holloway next week. The invitations are going out."
Miles had zero feelings for Quinn. In fact, he despised her, a fact apparent to anyone paying attention.
Gillian lowered her eyes, her fingers inexplicably tightening around the fabric of her clothes. "Do all powerful men hate it when a woman they don't love forces them into marriage?"
Xavier looked at her in silence, offering no immediate response.
Taking his silence as an answer, Gillian felt a bitter sense of clarity.
"I understand."
Watching her expression, Xavier's Adam's apple bobbed. "It depends on the person. Not everyone hates it."
Gillian forced a smile. "But most do. Especially men in high positions. They despise having things forced upon them."
So this was why York hated her.
He would never love her. Even if her five years of devotion couldn't compete with a few months of Hailey Sinclair, fifty years wouldn't make a difference either.
