Gillian's grip on the phone tightened. "York, do you really have to say such horrible things?"
Silence greeted her from the other end. No response at all.
She furrowed her brow and simply hung up.
She must have been completely out of her mind and entirely desperate to call him in the first place.
It was already humiliating enough. She took a deep breath, gathered her things, and headed home.
As soon as she walked in the door.
She went online.
She instantly stumbled upon news articles claiming her father was getting early parole. He hadn't even had a public trial yet, but the rumors were already spreading like wildfire...
The public seemed absolutely furious upon hearing the news.
[That scandal was huge back then. Why should a rapist get his sentence reduced and be released early?]
[If a convicted rapist can walk free, what about the trauma those girls suffered?]
The case was drawing massive attention and an endless stream of vitriol before even going to court.
Gillian bit her lip, her chest tightening with anguish. Her father was nothing like that, but right now, she couldn't step forward to defend him, nor could she find the evidence to clear his name.
Someone was dead set on smearing him and framing him. Whoever was behind this had to have immense power and influence to keep the truth buried for so many years without leaving a single trace.
There were times she truly doubted if she would ever find that evidence.
Just then, Xavier called.
His voice was as steady as ever. "What are you doing?"
"I saw the news online," she replied. "Did you see it?"
Xavier paused. "I called to talk to you about it. These internet mobs just blindly follow the wind. I'll have someone suppress this media coverage. Someone is definitely fanning the flames behind the scenes."
Gillian took a deep breath, pushing down her turbulent emotions. "Thank you—"
