I Refuse To Be Your Luna

Chapter 197 The Wolf In The Shadows

Alpha Damian’s POV

The black wolf disappeared beyond the trees before I could reach the broken window, leaving only its scent hanging in the cold night air while Flourish struggled against my arms.

Her claws had extended fully, her eyes were bright gold, and the force of her wolf pressed so strongly against my senses that even my own wolf became restless.

“Damian, let me go.”

I loosened my hold but did not release her completely. “Your father has silver in his chest.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke. “Then let me help him.”

I looked toward Garret. He was still breathing, but barely, and the silver arrow had already begun poisoning his wolf. Flourish rushed to him the moment I let her go, dropping to her knees and pressing both hands against his chest.

“Dad.”

His eyes opened slightly. “Flourish.”

“I’m here.”

She swallowed hard. “You’re going to be fine.”

He tried to smile. “You always were stubborn.”

Her lips trembled. “Save your strength.”

Garret’s gaze shifted toward me. “Take her away.”

I stepped closer. “Who shot you?”

His eyes hardened. “The black wolf.”

“Who is it?”

“I don’t know,” he said, his breathing growing weaker. “But he serves someone.”

Flourish’s hands trembled against the wound. “Who?”

“Your mother knew,” Garret said. “She knew who was behind everything. She was trying to expose him.”

Flourish’s face tightened. “Who?”

His voice was barely a whisper now. “Someone close.” His eyes opened once more. “Very close.”

Then his body went limp.

Flourish froze. “Dad?” She pressed her fingers against his neck. “Damian.”

I crouched beside her. “I know.”

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “He’s alive.”

I checked his pulse myself. It was weak, but there. “He’s alive.”

Relief crossed her face for half a second before anger returned. “We need a healer.”.

I called Rhys immediately. “Get the best healer available to Steele Residence.”

His response came fast. “Already on the way.”

Flourish looked at me. “How did you know to call him?”

“Because I know you,” I said, and her eyes softened briefly before her wolf growled and she turned toward the broken window.

“He’s still nearby.”

I stood. “You can smell him?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes and let my wolf take over my senses. There it was, faint but real. Wolf. Blood. And something else underneath it all, a familiar cologne I couldn’t quite place.

My eyes opened. “He’s not alone.”

Flourish stood beside me. “How many?”

“At least three.”

Her expression hardened. “They’re coming back.”

“Probably.”

I shifted halfway, claws extending from my fingertips. “Then we prepare.”

The security wolves rushed into the room a moment later, and I gave them their orders while Flourish stayed close to Garret. “Lock down the residence.”

One of the warriors nodded. “No one leaves.”

“Correct.”

Another warrior looked toward Flourish. “Alpha, what about Madam?”

“She stays with me.”

Flourish shook her head at once. “No.”

I looked at her. “I’m not leaving you.”

“I’m not asking you to,” she said, wiping the blood from her fingers. “I’m going after him.”

“No.”

Her eyes flashed gold. “Damian.”

“You don’t know what he’s capable of.”

“I know exactly what he’s capable of,” she said, her voice shaking with anger. “He shot my father.”

I stepped closer to her. “And he wants you to chase him.”

She stopped, and I touched her cheek gently. “This is a trap.”

She looked into my eyes. “I know.”

“Then don’t walk into it.”

Her wolf pushed against mine through the bond, and for several seconds neither of us moved. Then she leaned forward and rested her forehead against my chest.

“I hate this.”

I wrapped my arms around her. “I know.”

“I just found out my whole life was built on lies.”

“I know.”

“And now my father might die.”

“I know.”

She looked up at me. “Promise me something.”

“Anything.”

“Don’t let them take me.”

My arms tightened around her. “They won’t.”

She kissed me then, brief but desperate, and the moment our lips met, our wolves connected through the bond.

Warmth moved through my chest, sharpening my senses and pushing back the exhaustion from the fight we had barely survived.

When she pulled away, her eyes were wet. “I love you.”

My heart tightened in my chest. “I love you too.”

A sudden howl sounded outside, and every wolf in the house froze at once. The howl came again, closer this time, and Flourish’s wolf answered it instinctively before she could stop herself. The windows shook, and the security alarm went off a second later.

Rhys’s voice came through my phone. “Damian, we have movement.”
