The growl came from the creature standing at the far end of the chamber, and the warriors around me struggled to keep their feet.

Its body was larger than any wolf I had seen, with dark fur clinging to its shoulders and blood coating one side of its muzzle.

Harold stepped in front of me, his Alpha aura spreading through the chamber.

“Everyone hold your positions. Keep your distance.”

The warriors obeyed, though several of them lowered their heads as the creature’s pushed against their wolves.

I felt it too, but the force did not make me want to submit or run.

Instead, my blood reacted.

A strange heat moved through my arms, and the ancient markings carved into the chamber walls began to glow faintly.

I looked at the creature again, trying to understand why its presence felt familiar.

Then I caught its scent.

It was the same one I had noticed on the eastern commander’s body. The scent had been faint there, mixed with blood and the smell of the battlefield, but there was no mistaking it now.

“Harold,” I said. “That’s the scent from the commander.”

“I know.” He kept his eyes on the creature. “Stay behind me.”

Marvolo shifted against the wall where Harold had helped him sit. His face was pale, and one hand pressed against the wound beneath his ribs.

“That thing was guarding Elara,” he said. “It wasn’t an ordinary wolf, and it wasn’t a rogue.”

“What is it, then?” I asked.

Marvolo tried to answer, but the creature lowered its head and moved.

Harold’s hand shot out, stopping me from stepping forward. The creature crossed the chamber in a few heavy strides, its claws scraping against the stone floor.

“Attack!” Harold ordered.

The warriors rushed it from both sides. Some had shifted halfway, their claws extended and their teeth exposed, while others struck with silver-tipped weapons designed for rogue wolves.

The first blows landed across the creature’s shoulders and flank. It stumbled, then swung its head and sent one warrior crashing into the wall.

Another wolf caught its hind leg with a blade. The creature snarled and twisted free, leaving blood across the floor, but it did not fall.

Harold shifted fully and lunged at its side. His jaws caught the creature near the shoulder, forcing it away from the injured Marvolo.

The creature struck back with a force that drove Harold across the chamber. He landed on his feet, claws digging into the stone, and immediately charged again.

“Keep it away from the entrance!” he shouted.

The warriors tried to form a line, but the creature’s aura grew stronger. One of them dropped to his knees, his wolf fighting against the pressure.

Another began to shift uncontrollably, his body jerking as he struggled to hold on to his human form.

I felt the same pressure pressing against my chest, but it stopped before it could take hold of

My hands had begun to glow.

I looked down, startled, and saw thin lines of light moving beneath my skin. The markings on the wall brightened in response, tracing the old symbols around the chamber.

The creature turned toward me.

Harold noticed at once.

“Flourish, don’t move!”

I could barely hear him over the growls and the sound of claws striking stone. The creature’s eyes fixed on me, and the heat in my blood grew stronger.

It knew I was there.

Or it recognized what I carried.

The thought made me take a step forward before I could stop myself. Harold broke away from the fight and reached for me, but I pulled my arm free.

“The ward is responding to me,” I said. “I think I can stop it.”

“You don’t know what it will do.”

“I know it’s reacting to my blood.”

The creature lunged again, pushing through the warriors’ line. Harold turned to intercept it, but one of the wolves fell directly into its path.

I raised my hands toward the wall.

The ancient markings flared, and a low vibration passed through the chamber floor. Stone shifted beneath the creature’s feet, forcing it to slow as a pale barrier rose between it and the

entrance.

The ward was not solid enough to trap it, but it blocked the narrow passage.

“Harold, get Marvolo out!”

Harold hesitated for only a moment before turning back. He seized Marvolo under one arm and dragged him toward the chamber’s safer side while Rhys and two warriors moved to help.

The creature slammed into the barrier.

The impact sent dust and small pieces of stone raining from the ceiling. Pain shot through my hands, and I nearly lost my balance, but I kept my palms raised.

The markings burned brighter along the wall.

“Flourish!” Harold called.

“I’m holding it!”

The creature struck the barrier a second time. A crack appeared in the stone beside me, and the ward began to weaken.

I could not keep it closed for long.

The creature suddenly turned away from the barrier and charged toward a narrow side tunnel. One warrior tried to block it, but Harold shouted for him to move.

The creature forced its way through the passage, tearing at the stone with its claws. A section of the tunnel wall collapsed behind it, filling the chamber with dust and broken rock.

I lowered my hands. The light beneath my skin faded, and the markings on the wall dimmed until only their carved outlines remained.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Harold shifted back, breathing hard. Blood ran down his arm, and one of his shoulders was already swelling.
