I Refuse To Be Your Luna

Chapter 39 The Future Luna

Alpha Harold’s POV

Lunch had barely begun when I noticed Phina was uncomfortable.

She kept smiling whenever my mother spoke to her, but every few minutes her fingers drifted toward her wrist before she quickly pulled them back beneath the table.

My mother noticed too. Lady Daciana had always been unusually observant, especially when it came to people she cared about.

“Phina, dear, are you alright?” she asked, setting her fork down.

The conversation around the table faded, and Phina immediately straightened.

“I’m perfectly fine, Lady Daciana.”

My mother narrowed her eyes. “You don’t look perfectly fine. Is the moonrose reaction still bothering you?”

Phina hesitated before rubbing the inside of her wrist.

“It’s only a little irritated.”

My mother’s expression softened. “Does it burn? I can apply more lavender oil.”

“It isn’t necessary.”

Across the table, Damian had been watching her without saying anything. His expression remained calm, but his wolf stirred beneath his skin, and I caught the subtle change in his

scent.

“Where is the reaction?” he asked.

Phina froze.

“It has mostly healed.”

Damian nodded once and reached for his glass. “Then it couldn’t have been too serious.”

1 expected the subject to end there, but Damian looked directly at me.

“Flourish’s reaction was considerably worse.”

My hand stopped halfway toward my glass.

The words immediately changed the atmosphere at the table.

My father frowned. Alpha Magnus looked up from his meal, while my mother’s expression shifted into concern.

“What do you mean?” Ragnar asked.

Damian placed his glass down carefully. “She was injured too.”

I stared at him. “What injury?”

His green eyes settled on me, and something about his expression made my wolf become alert.

“Flourish is your betrothed, Harold,” he said quietly. “Don’t tell me you never noticed.”

My stomach tightened.

I remembered the redness around Flourish’s neck when she had stormed into my office. I had noticed it, but I had dismissed it because I had been angry with her.

Now I remembered how she had kept touching the side of her neck and how pale she had looked beneath her anger.

I had never asked.

Before I could answer, Magnus spoke.

“Damian, Explain.”

Damian reached into his pocket and brought out his telecom.

“My assistant recorded part of what happened yesterday.”

Phina went rigid.

My wolf caught the sudden change in her scent before I could stop myself from noticing it. Fear.

Darnian unlocked the device and placed it on the table.

“You should watch it.”

Phina Mood so quickly her chair scraped against the floor.

“Alpha Damian misunderstood what happened.”

Damian looked at her. “Then everyone can decide after watching the recording.”

No one argued.

My grandfather picked up the telecom, and my parents leaned closer.

The recording began.

Selene appeared first. Then came the argument, followed by the moment she threw the moonrose wine over Flourish.

My jaw tightened.

The recording ended before Flourish retaliated. Damian had deliberately stopped it there.

He had shown us exactly enough to establish what had happened without showing the part that made Flourish look equally responsible.

My eyes narrowed.

“Why did you cut the recording?” I asked.

“Because that part wasn’t relevant to what I wanted you to see.”

My wolf growled quietly.

Damian ignored it.

He turned toward Phina instead. “Would you like to explain why you never mentioned that and Selene were involved in the confrontation?”

Phina’s face lost its color.

“I never meant for any of it to happen.”

Her voice trembled, and I immediately felt the familiar instinct to protect her.

“She didn’t throw the wine,” I said.

Damian’s gaze shifted toward me.

“Neither did Flourish.”

I stiffened.

My mother spoke before I could respond. “It was Selene who threw it.”

She looked at Phina with clear disappointment but not anger.

“I don’t think it is fair to place all the blame on Phina.”

Relief flashed across Phina’s face.

I nodded. “Exactly.”

I looked at Damian. “Selene and Flourish have never gotten along. Why drag Phina into their argument simply because she was there?”

His expression hardened.

“She was there when Flourish was injured.”

I frowned. “Flourish never told me.”

The words escaped before I could stop them.

Damian’s eyebrows lifted slightly.

“That should concern you.”

Something hot moved through my chest.

Why hadn’t she told me?

Why had she apparently been comfortable letting Damian know about her condition while keeping me in the dark?

The thought irritated me more than it should have.

I looked at Damian. “Since when does Flourish report her problems to you?”

The room went silent.

His wolf pressed against his skin.

The shift was subtle, but every wolf at the table felt it.

“Harold.”

My name came out as a warning.

I held his stare, refusing to back down.

“After seeing that recording,” he continued, “your first concern should be your betrothed.”

My mouth opened, but I had no answer.

The truth was sitting in front of everyone.

I had been so focused on Phina, on our argument, on what Flourish had done afterward, that I had never stopped to ask whether she was alright.

My father broke the silence.

“Enough.”

His voice had Alpha authority, and my wolf immediately became still.

Ragnar looked at me with disappointment.

“You are clearly in the wrong.”
