“It’s fine.” I set my fork down and gave Phina a faint smile. “I understand.”

The dining room went quiet. Her apology had been accepted, but the tension around the table hadn’t lifted. My wolf stayed alert, catching every shift in scent, every change in the air.
Phina looked at me like she hadn’t expected me to answer so easily, then lowered her eyes. “Flourish.” Her voice came out soft. “You forgive me, right?”
My wolf lifted her head. There was an expectation behind those words, and I felt it clearly. I kept my in place, though nothing warm sat behind it anymore.

Harold went still, jaw tight, fingers curling against the table.
Lady Daciana stood quickly and grabbed my hand. “Come now, Flourish.” Her smile stayed composed, but her scent didn’t match it. She was afraid. “Whatever it is, let’s talk after dinner. It’s almost seven, you’ve worked all day, you must be starving.”
“She’s right,” Alpha Ragnar said. “Let’s eat first.”
The timing was too convenient. They were stalling, though I couldn’t tell if it was for Harold’s sake or Alpha Magnus’s. Still, I sat back down.
Dinner went on. Nobody seemed interested in their food anymore, but I kept my attention on my plate and refused to let their discomfort ruin my evening.
A few minutes later, Ragnar set his utensils down. “Father, there’s something I need to discuss with you.”

Alpha Magnus frowned. “What is it?”
“A project involving the Council of Elders.”
His expression tightened. “So suddenly?”
“I’m afraid so.”
“Does it have to happen right now?”
“Unfortunately.”
The answer came too fast. Alpha Magnus looked between Ragnar and Damian, and I stayed quiet, watching. They were manufacturing a reason to clear the table.

I stared at her, then laughed softly, no humor in it. I was simply tired.
