Chapter 48 Unspoken Boundaries
Lady Flourish’s POV
Damian’s gaze stayed on me, steady enough to make me shift in my seat.
The private dining room had gone quiet, the sounds from the restaurant outside barely reaching us, leaving me painfully aware of my own heartbeat and the restless movement of my wolf.
Then Damian spoke. “You told Lady Daciana today that you intend to call off your betrothal to Harold My fingers tightened around my phone. “Is that true?”
I stared at him. “You already know about that?”
“I overheard part of the conversation while passing by.” He said it casually, as though he hadn’t just admited to hearing something that could change the Virel family completely.
I leaned back. “Yes. I don’t plan to continue the betrothal.”
My wolf settled slightly, as if she approved of finally saying it aloud. “I already told Lady Daciana. She said Grandpa’s health isn’t very good, so he might need time to accept the decision.”
Damian nodded slowly. “There are only a few days left before the Lunar Rite.”
“Yes.” Only a few days. After six years of waiting, of missed celebrations and broken promises, everything had come down to a handful of days.
I had spent so long believing things would eventually change that making the decision still felt strange. But I wasn’t uncertain anymore.
He studied my face. “Have you thought this through?”
“Yes.” I didn’t hesitate.
His shoulders relaxed. “Okay, then.”
I blinked. That was it? “You aren’t going to persuade me?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Why would I?”
“You’re part
of the Virel family. I thought you’d want me to reconsider.”
A faint smile touched his mouth. “I respect your decision.”
Something inside me loosened. I hadn’t realized how much I’d expected him to tell me I was making a mistake. Instead he simply accepted it.
Then his expression changed. “However.” My wolf went alert. “If you and Harold are ending the engagement, it wouldn’t be appropriate for you to keep calling me Alpha Damian.” He continued calmly. “Call me Damian.”
I stared at him. “Just Damian?”

He nodded. I’m not that much older than you.”
most laughed. Not that much older. He was more than a decade older than me and one of the stronge Alhas across the seven territories. Calling him by his name felt wrong.
My wolf, however, seemed strangely interested in the suggestion. I frowned inwardly. Traitor.
Damian noticed my hesitation: “I also don’t particularly like the way you’ve suddenly started attaching my title to every sentence.”
Heat climbed into my checks. I opened my mouth, and the words Alpha Damian nearly slipped out again before I stopped myself.
Something about saying his name felt different. A title created distance, reminding me he was Harold’s older brother, an Alpha, someone I should keep boundaries with. Without it, that distance disappeared.
I forced myself to meet his eyes. That was a mistake. His gaze stayed fixed on me, and the quiet pressure of his Alpha presence made my wolf shift beneath my skin. Not fear. Something else, something I didn’t want to examine.
He seemed to notice my discomfort. “It’s no rush.” His voice softened. “You’ll get used to it eventually.”
I released a breath. “Right.” I reached for my water and took a sip.
Being alone with Damian had become increasingly difficult. He hadn’t crossed a line, hadn’t said anything inappropriate, yet every conversation left me questioning my own reactions. I didn’t like that at all.
I pushed my chair back. “I’m going to use the restroom.”
He looked up. “Of course.”
I left before my wolf could embarrass me further. The moment the door closed behind me I released the breath I’d been holding, walking quickly through the hallway, trying to clear my head.
Why had calling him Damian suddenly felt more intimate than it should? Why did my wolf whenever he was near? I shook my head. I was still dealing with Harold. The last thing I neede confusion about another man.
I pushed open the restroom door. The cool scent of lavender soap reached me. I took two steps inside.
Then I heard a familiar voice. “So it really was you.”
I stopped. Every thought about Damian disappeared. My wolf rose at once and my body stiffened as I turned slowly toward the mirror.
Selene stood beside the sinks with her arms crossed, her expression openly hostile. For several seconds neither of us spoke.
My wolf recognized her scent immediately, and the memory of wine hitting my clothes at Stonehedge flashed through my mind. My fingers tightened around my handbag.
Selene pushed herself away from the counter. “I knew I recognized your scent.”
My eyes narrowed. “So you followed me here?”

Her lips curled. “Don’t flatter yourself. I happened to be here.”
I didn’t move. My wolf stayed ready beneath my skin, pressing against my control. Selene looked me over. then her gaze settled on my face. “I heard you’ve been causing problems at Stonehedge.”
A quiet laugh escaped me. “That’s interesting.”
“What is?”
“I was about to say the same thing about you.”
