Chapter 68 A Call From Outside

Daly Flourish’s POV

The door didn’t budge. Locked from the outside. I tried the handle again anyway, already knowing it was pointless, my wolf growling beneath my skin, claws pressing at my fingertips as anger burned off the last of whatever weakness Lydia’s drug had left in me.

She wanted me trapped. The window confirmed it. Two wolves stood guard in the back garden, one near the rear entrance, the other by the wall separating the villa from the neighboring property, both carrying the alert, controlled posture of trained enforcers. Even through the glass I caught their scern.

Lydia had planned this down to the detail.

‘I opened a mind link with Davina. Dev, my stepmother locked me up. Probably because I tried to break the betrothal, Can you send someone? I need to talk to your grandpa in person about the rite. I owed Alpha Magnus that much, telling him myself instead of vanishing or sending a messenger.

She answered almost instantly. What? Is she crazy? Hang on, I’ll get someone to you right away.

Relief loosened my chest for a second. Hurry.

I will.

The link closed. I stayed at the window watching the guards below until one of them looked up, and I stepped back before he could spot me, my wolf lowering herself on instinct. Neither of us liked being watched.

I’d already tried my father before Davina. He’d actually hung up on me. I’d stared at the phone afterward waiting for a callback that never came.

My wolf snarled, and I wanted to throw the thing at the wall. Instead I reached for Mira through the link.

Mira?

Nothing.

I tried again. Still nothing.

Before I could try a third time, a voice came from the hallway. “Flourish, stop with the mind links already.”

Selene. I moved closer to the door and heard her footsteps stop outside. “You’re interfering with mine,” she complained.

I rolled my eyes. Apparently being locked in my own bedroom wasn’t enough, I was also supposed to make myself invisible so she could have a peaceful day.

“Besides,” she said, cheerful now, “Dad already said he’s not letting you out.” I could picture the smug look on her face without needing to see it. “What’s so bad about Alpha Harold anyway? You really think you’ll do better after breaking up with him?”

My wolf flattened her ears, my nails digging into my palms.

Several minutes later, slower footsteps approached. Lydia, her heels unmistakable, on the phone and taking loud enough that every word carried down the hall.

“Flourish isn’t making a fuss anymore, is she?”

My father’s voice. I went completely still.
