Chapter 160

The rest of the ride was silent.

Forty minutes later, the Maybach stopped outside Mooncrest Manor.

“Mr. Blackthorne, thank you.” I unbuckled my seatbelt, preparing to leave

I saw Beckett, Calista’s butler, approaching the car with a smile.

“Mr. Blackthorne.”

Ragnar recognized him. He could have stayed in the car, but he unbuckled his seatbelt, got out, and nodded in acknowledgement.

Beckett’s smile widened. He knew what this meant. Ragnar wouldn’t have given him this courtesy if not for my importance to Calista.

“Calista knows you brought Seren back. She’s asked me to invite you in for tea.”

Calista was an elder; Ragnar couldn’t refuse.

“Okay.”

This was unexpected. I’d planned to thank him properly.

Beckett warmly welcomed Ragnar. Calista watched us walk in, a satisfied smile on her face.

“Calista.”

“Calista.”

We spoke simultaneously.

Calista took my hand and looked at Ragnar.

“Ragnar, please sit. Seren will make you some tea. This girl makes excellent tea.”

“My pleaure.”

Ragnar glanced at me, the living room light catching a glimmer in my eyes.

I averted my gaze, heading to the tearoom.

Calista chatted with Ragnar, then excused herself to join me.

I was making tea when Calista entered.”Calista.”

“Seren, what did you think of Ragnar?”

She was pleased with Ragnar. She’d considered the Blackthorne family when arranging my blind date. Ragnar had come to mind, but even though I was perfect, the Blackthornes might not see it the same way.

She wanted a protector for me, someone who would stand by me.

She’d considered someone less powerful within the family, connected to Ragnar.

Ragnar defended his siblings; that would extend to me. But, unexpectedly, Ragnar had agreed without hesitation.

At first, she thought it was Selene he’d agreed to meet.

She didn’t know he wanted to meet ‘me’.

“He was fine…”

Calista beamed. Tea’s best served warm.”

She summoned a servant to serve the tea, interrupting me.

My words went unspoken as Calista led me back to the living room.

I sat beside Calista; Ragnar sat opposite.

“Ragnar, try Seren’s tea. Does it suit your taste?” Calista had a plan.

Ragnar was intelligent and understood her implication.

He took a sip, holding the cup, then turned to Calista. “Very good; it suits my taste.”

Those words brought a smile to Calista’s face. “And what about my Seren?”

She knew the answer.

“Better.”I said it directly.

I had a good impression of him, and didn’t hide it.
