That night, Isaac Holloway called Finn.
"You asked me to keep an eye on things at the hospital, worried someone might try to sabotage Sienna. Did you overthink it?"
Finn sighed heavily into the receiver.
"I pray to God I'm just overthinking it."
"She's leaving the country."
Dead silence stretched over the line.
"Where to?"
"Africa. Kanya. The hospital is sending her on an outreach program."
Another long pause.
"When?"
"Next week."
"Understood."
"Are you worried something might happen to her in Africa?" Isaac pressed.
"I won't let anything happen to her."
Finn hung up.
He stared at his phone screen, eyes locked on the glaring red exclamation mark next to his last message to Sienna.
She had blocked him completely.
He had fought so hard, only for everything to shatter and reset to zero.
His chest throbbed with a dull, agonizing ache, like a rusted blade twisting into his ribs.
The next morning, at the Global Air flight operations center.
Finn pushed open the door to the dispatch manager's office.
Julian Vance was rubbing his temples, stressing over the flight rosters, but looked up when Finn walked in.
"Well, if it isn't Captain Fletcher. What can I do for you?"
"Julian, about my reinstatement flights... I need to change my route."
"To where?"
"Africa. Kanya."
Julian stared at him, convinced his ears were failing him.
"Where?"
"Kanya."
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, looking at Finn as if he had entirely lost his mind.
"Are you insane? Management is rolling out the red carpet for your return. They gave you the prime European routes. And you want to swap them for Africa? Do you have any idea what's going on down there?"
"I do."
She couldn't quite name the emotion hollowed out inside her.
It was just a vast, lingering emptiness, a void she didn't know how to fill.
Lily James walked her to the security checkpoint, holding Sienna's hand tightly, her eyes rimmed with red.
"You're going so far away all by yourself. I'm worried sick."
"I'll be back before you know it," Sienna smiled warmly. "It's only a week."
"Even a week is too long!"
"Alright, I really need to go."
Sienna gave her hand a final squeeze and turned into the security lane.
Boarding commenced.
She found her window seat, settled in, buckled her seatbelt, and switched her phone to airplane mode.
She stared out the window at the row of massive aircraft on the tarmac, finally closing her eyes to catch some sleep.
The PA system chimed alive.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard. I am your Captain..."
Sienna's eyes snapped open.
"...Finn Fletcher."
