Before the third attacker could raise his knife again, Maeve swung the iron pipe, smashing it hard against his shoulder.
The man stumbled, completely enraged.
He violently spun around, aiming the blade directly at her.
Finn was locked in a struggle with the other two men. From his peripheral vision, he saw the knife gleam as it was raised high—and then plunge down.
Dark blood instantly blossomed across Maeve's clothes, soaking through the fabric in seconds.
Finn's eyes went red.
"Mom!" The word tore from his throat.
It was an instinctual, unconscious roar that bypassed his brain entirely.
His voice was hoarse, desperate, and thick with terror.
Under the dim amber glow of the streetlamp, the faint light fell on Maeve's face. She slowly lifted her head, and in her usually cold eyes, it looked as if something had shattered.
Her lips parted slightly. The sheer shock of hearing him call her 'Mom' seemed to erase her pain entirely.
Tears mingled with the sweat on her forehead, catching the fractured light of the alleyway.
She looked at Finn as if she had spent half her life waiting to hear that single word.
A terrifying rage erupted within Finn. He brutally kicked the man beside him into the wall and tackled the other one to the concrete.
He lunged toward Maeve, disarming the man who had stabbed her in a blur of violence.
He slammed his knee into the man's spine, pinning him to the ground.
He pressed the captured blade directly against the attacker's throat.
Police sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder until flashing red and blue lights illuminated the narrow alley.
Maeve leaned heavily against the brick wall, blood seeping through her fingers. But she wasn't looking at her wound. Her gaze cut through the shadows, locked entirely on Finn.
The ambulance arrived.
Finn shoved the attackers toward the police and sprinted to Maeve.
His hands were shaking violently as he helped her up, his voice barely a whisper.
"Hold on. We're getting you to a hospital."
Maeve leaned her weight against him, staying silent.
She was in too much agony to speak, but she gripped his hand with everything she had.
Inside the ambulance, Maeve lost consciousness from the pain. Finn aggressively interrogated the paramedics, demanding answers.
He didn't let go of her hand until the doctor swore her vitals were stable and the wound hadn't hit any major organs.
The doctor looked at him.
"Are you her son?"
Finn didn't deny it.
