The atmosphere at the table was just starting to warm back up, and Lily was about to say something to smooth things over when Finn's phone suddenly rang.
He answered it, listened for a few seconds, and his expression instantly plummeted.
Sienna saw the shift in his demeanor, and her heart jumped into her throat.
"Shh!" Sienna placed a finger to her lips, signaling the group.
Everyone immediately fell silent.
All eyes turned toward Finn.
Finally, Finn ended the call. He moved so abruptly that his knee slammed into the edge of the table.
The glass soda bottle rolled off the surface and plummeted to the ground.
It struck the edge of the stone steps.
With a sharp crack, it shattered.
The sound was deafening in the dead-silent air.
Finn looked at Sienna.
"Something happened in Metropolis."
The string lights in the courtyard were still glowing, casting a warm yellow hue that illuminated the shock on everyone's faces.
Noah stood up, followed immediately by Georgina. Lily covered her mouth with her hands while Isaac reached out to steady her.
The lights beneath the trees gleamed quietly. No one made a sound.
Finn gripped his phone tightly in his palm.
"I need to head back right now."
Sienna stepped up and grabbed his hand.
"I'm coming with you."
Finn's fingers were ice-cold. He squeezed her hand back weakly.
He turned his head, looked at her for a moment, and gave a tight nod.
The streetlights outside the car window blurred into a streak as they sped back much faster than when they had arrived.
Sienna sat in the passenger seat, staring at the side of Finn's face as he gripped the steering wheel, his expression grim.
She didn't say a word, sitting quietly in the seat, only occasionally checking the GPS to see how many miles were left.
It was already the dead of night by the time they reached Metropolis.
The fluorescent lights in the hallways of Mercy International Hospital were blindingly white, and the sharp scent of antiseptic hit them from every direction. Finn marched ahead, his strides long and urgent, forcing Sienna into a slight jog just to keep up.
Lance Dayton was already waiting in the corridor.
