Finn stood there as if he had been cleaved in two.
Sienna wasn't faring any better.
The bad news was hitting them in relentless waves.
How did Felicia get dragged into this?
It took a long time for Finn to finally find his voice.
"Lance, tell me exactly what happened. From the very beginning. Leave nothing out."
Lance took a deep breath.
"Honestly, what I know is limited. The police are already digging into the details."
"Chloe showed up at the West End construction site yesterday during the day. She somehow got her hands on a worker's uniform, sneaked into the active zone, and climbed up a building that hadn't been capped yet. She stood on the ledge holding York, threatening to jump."
Finn's fingers dug painfully into Sienna's palm.
"Finn, thank god you gave the order to keep a 24-hour watch on the site. The foreman recognized her and called me immediately. By the time I got up there with security, she hadn't crossed the safety barrier yet. The guards tackled her, and she didn't jump."
Lance's voice grew raspy.
"But she didn't leave. People said she wandered around the outskirts of the site all day. Around nine at night, someone saw her carrying the kid onto the Metro Bridge."
Lance paused, struggling to find the right words.
"According to witnesses and some patched-together surveillance footage, Chloe set York on the outer ledge of the bridge rail. Then she climbed over herself and crouched there. Someone called the cops, but before they could arrive..." His voice dropped to a whisper. "York didn't understand what was happening. Maybe he got scared, or maybe he tried to grab her. He lunged forward. Chloe reached out to catch him, and they both went over the edge."
Finn's lips were trembling.
"Felicia was just driving by. She was crossing the bridge and saw the whole thing happen. Witnesses said she didn't even bother shutting her car door before she jumped in after them." Lance's voice cracked. "She was close enough to grab York first. She dragged him and treaded water for a while until some other bystanders jumped in to help haul them up. The moment they hit the shore, Felicia started bleeding heavily, and York was unconscious."
Finn closed his eyes in agony.
