Finn finished speaking and strode toward the door.
Yolanda screamed like a lunatic. "Come back! Get back here!"
But Finn acted as if he hadn't heard a thing.
He ran out of the villa into the biting cold of the night wind.
The early spring breeze was harsh, slicing across his face like a blade.
The chill aggravated his injuries, sending a piercing wave of agony through him.
He reached his car but didn't open the door.
Letting the freezing air wash over him, he pulled out his phone with trembling hands and found the social media contact Isaac had forwarded to him—Sienna's profile.
He stared at her avatar, a picture of the ocean under a brilliant blue sky.
He gazed at the photo for a long time, as if he could see her right through the screen.
He tapped to add her as a friend and started typing in the request note.
His fingers were red from the cold, and his swollen cheek throbbed so terribly that he could barely keep one eye open.
Through that narrow squint, he typed out a single line.
"Sienna, I'm begging you. I miss you so much. Please add me? Just take pity on me."
After typing it, he froze.
He never spoke like this.
When had he ever begged anyone? But right now, he felt like a drowning man desperately thrashing for a lifeline.
And Sienna was the only one who could save him.
His finger hovered over the send button before pulling back.
Why should she help him?
He didn't want to put that much pressure on her.
He deleted the line and started over.
"Sienna, it's Finn. I have so much I want to say to you. I want to explain exactly what happened back then."
Sincere, restrained, and pressure-free.
It was a phrasing he had weighed carefully.
He hit send and gripped his phone tightly.
His heart hammered against his ribs, making him more nervous than his very first flight.
He stared at the screen, refusing to let it go dark, as if its glow was his only beacon of hope.
He stood in the freezing wind for half an hour until his body grew stiff.
His fingers were numb, the injuries on his face throbbed relentlessly, and his swollen eye had completely shut.
He kept his good eye fixed on the screen as it lit up and faded to black over and over again.
Still no reply.
Dejected, he finally climbed into his car.
The second he slammed the door shut, his phone buzzed.
He lurched forward in excitement, looking entirely unlike the seasoned, unflappable captain he was known to be.
At the word 'hospital,' he suddenly looked up at Isaac.
"Let's go to your hospital. St. Jude's, right now. The ER."
Isaac stared at him, pausing for a moment before seeing right through him. "She's off today."
He paused again before adding, "Still want to go?"
A shadow fell over Finn's eyes.
He popped the cap off a bottle of beer.
"It's nothing serious. Never mind."
Xavier looked back and forth between them, completely lost.
"What are you two talking about? Who is 'she'? Don't hold out on me, keeping secrets behind my back isn't cool."
Isaac glanced at Finn, who was chugging the alcohol, and warned him,
"You can't drink with those injuries. It'll make the swelling worse."
Finn ignored him.
He opened another bottle and drank straight from it.
Xavier stared in shock.
"Look at you go. You're really throwing them back tonight."
Finn didn't answer, downing half the bottle in one breath.
The alcohol stung the cut on his lip, sending a sharp burn across his face. He frowned but didn't stop.
