Down the hall, Xavier leaned against the wall outside the ward, watching Isaac approach.
"Well? What did she say?"
Isaac shook his head.
Xavier clicked his tongue in annoyance.
"That beautiful doctor is too damn cold. She's stunning, but her personality is awful. I think Finn should just let it go. Why put himself through this kind of torture?"
Isaac said nothing.
Xavier kept going.
"If someone didn't know better, they'd think he murdered her family. Is it really necessary? With Finn's background, getting into a relationship would be the easiest thing in the world. Even if he doesn't want Chloe, there are lines of women ready to throw themselves at him. Are you kidding me? He's the Fletcher heir. He could have any elite heiress he wanted. Why hang himself on this one particular tree?"
Isaac shot him a sharp look.
"I have work to do. Go check on Finn, and remember—keep your mouth shut."
Xavier kept grumbling.
"You think I talk too much? Tell me I'm wrong."
Inside the room.
Finn was propped up in his hospital bed. The swelling on his face had gone down slightly, but the bruised purples and blues were still glaringly obvious.
He could open his left eye a fraction more, and the cut on his lip had scabbed over.
He clutched his phone, staring at the darkened screen, lost in thought.
Xavier walked in and grabbed a chair by the bed.
"Man, I just went out for a breather and saw your company's brass."
Finn looked up.
"Global Air reps. They're here to question your attending physician and evaluate if you're fit to fly." Xavier dropped his voice to a whisper. "Pray to God they don't ask your nemesis first love. Otherwise, she'll definitely sabotage you."
Finn stared at him.
"She won't."
"How do you know?"
"She just won't."
Xavier got agitated.
"I'm telling you, you're way too confident. You have no idea how brutal she is. She completely chewed me out, and she chewed Isaac out too. Even if Isaac and I teamed up, we wouldn't be a match for her. She's got a razor for a tongue."
Finn set his phone down and looked out the window.
The sky outside was an overcast gray, hiding the sun entirely.
"It's not confidence," he said softly. "I just know her. That's not who she is. She is incredibly kind, kinder than anyone. As a doctor, she saves lives without caring about who the person is. She wouldn't sabotage me professionally just because she hates me."
Xavier opened his mouth to argue, but ultimately swallowed his words.
Outside the door, Sienna was standing in the hall.
She had come to do her rounds.
Isaac glanced at Finn.
Finn was leaning back against the pillows, eyes closed, his face entirely unreadable.
But his hands were still locked in a death grip around his phone, exactly like they had been the night before.
"Finn definitely knows better," Isaac replied. "After all, they dated for two years. He knows her better than you do."
Finn's eyes snapped open.
Two years. Those two years had been the best days of his life.
He used to banish the memories, because remembering hurt too much.
And bringing it up now still felt like a physical blow.
An invisible, crushing weight settled squarely over his chest, stealing his breath.
Xavier fell silent, sensing the shift in the room.
Seeing Finn look so agonizingly broken, he suddenly felt like his previous remarks had been wildly insensitive.
"I'm gonna go buy some fruit." Xavier stood up and hurried out.
The room was left to just Isaac and Finn.
Isaac pulled up a chair and sat in heavy silence.
"She was just outside," he finally said.
Finn turned his head to stare at him.
