"I will make sure every single person saved by this drug knows that my grandfather's brilliance cured them, not Seraphina's stolen data."
"You can't steal true medical talent. As long as I'm practicing medicine, the Hayes family legacy won't fall."
The night breeze swept past, lifting the stray hairs across her forehead. Her eyes blazed with a fierce, undeniable intensity.
Quentin fell silent.
He just sat there, his head tilted, watching her.
As he looked, his gaze drifted down to her trembling shoulders.
She was making the boldest, most defiant declarations, yet there were still fresh tear tracks on her cheeks. She looked so fiercely stubborn, yet so incredibly fragile.
Something struck his chest—a sudden, uncharacteristic softness, accompanied by a strange jolt of electricity.
By the time he realized what he was doing, his hand was already reaching out.
Without warning, his large, warm palm settled gently on the top of her head.
Bonnie instantly froze.
She turned her head, her large, round eyes blinking up at him in utter confusion.
Quentin's long fingers sifted lightly through her hair, his body heat radiating steadily against her scalp.
Since his hand was already there, Quentin simply followed his instinct, stroking her hair with a surprising, uncharacteristic gentleness.
It was a level of tenderness that seemed entirely out of place for a man like him.
"Stop crying," he said, his voice dropping into a low, slightly raspy register. "Give me a checkup. I don't feel well today."
With that, he pulled his hand back a little too quickly and shoved it into his trouser pocket.
Bonnie sniffled, her attention instantly pivoting. She leaned in, her anxiety flaring.
"What's wrong? Is your vision blurring again? Are you dizzy?"
Quentin avoided her gaze, tossing out a single, dismissive word: "Unsure."
Bonnie stared at him, exasperated. "What does 'unsure' mean? It's your body. You can't tell what hurts?"
Deciding he was just being difficult, she reached out, grabbed his right wrist straight out of his pocket, and pressed her fingers firmly against his pulse point.
Quentin stiffened slightly at the sudden contact, but he didn't pull away.
