Bonnie was lying completely unguarded on her side across the therapy bed, curled up into a tiny ball. The book she had been reading was loosely discarded near her hand.
Her eyes were shut, her breathing light, entirely lost in a deep sleep.
Quentin raised an eyebrow and closed the distance with his long strides.
He leaned over slightly, observing her face from just inches away.
A faint, rosy flush colored her cheeks. Half-buried against her arm, her skin looked incredibly luminous, smooth enough that he could see the fine peach fuzz along her jawline.
Her long lashes cast soft shadows beneath her eyes, and her lips were slightly parted, making her look as defenseless as a sleeping animal.
Staring at her, Quentin felt a sudden, inexplicable pull. She looked stunningly serene.
A stubborn strand of hair had fallen loose, resting lightly against the tip of her nose.
With every breath she took, the fine strand fluttered.
Driven by an impulse he didn't quite understand, Quentin reached out, intent on brushing the hair behind her ear.
But Bonnie was an incredibly light sleeper.
The exact second his warm fingertips brushed her skin, her eyes snapped open.
Before her vision even focused, her survival instinct kicked in, and she violently jerked upright.
*Smack!*
A dull, heavy thud echoed through the room.
Because she surged up so aggressively, her forehead smashed solidly against Quentin's jaw and lips.
The sheer force of the impact caught Quentin entirely off guard, forcing him to stumble a large step backward.
He covered his mouth, a muffled groan of pain vibrating in his throat.
The collision jarred Bonnie completely awake. Horrified, she scrambled off the therapy bed and reached out in a panic to check on him.
"Quentin! Are you okay? I'm so sorry, I swear I didn't mean to!"
Quentin's brow furrowed tightly. He held up a hand, palm facing her, firmly demanding she keep her distance.
He shot her a look that was equal parts exasperation and deep, complicated accusation.
When he finally lowered his hand, Bonnie gasped, her panic spiking instantly.
