He silently lifted the edge of his dark gray duvet, letting his body heat radiate outward without restraint.
Though they shared the same bed, they had always used separate blankets, maintaining a clear and invisible boundary between them.
Yet at this moment, that boundary was completely obliterated by the biting cold.
Soon enough, the sleeping Bonnie caught the subtle wave of warmth. She groggily stretched out her leg, blindly testing the space in front of her.
Her icy foot brushed against the solid, burning heat of his calf. She let out a contented sigh, feeling as if she had just found a massive space heater.
Unable to resist, she pressed both feet against him, practically clinging to the source of heat.
Quentin's body went taut the second her cold skin touched his. His Adam's apple bobbed heavily.
But he didn't move. He just waited.
Sure enough, a second later, Bonnie realized that warming her feet wasn't enough. Like a kitten seeking shelter, she slowly shimmied her way across the mattress.
She slipped directly under his duvet, curling herself into a tight little ball and naturally tucking herself right against his chest.
Quentin's lips curved into a victorious smirk. He smoothly wrapped the heavy duvet around her and pulled her tighter into his arms.
The last shred of space between them vanished.
Half-asleep, Bonnie instinctively nuzzled deeper against him, her arms wrapping around his lean, muscular waist.
He felt an unprecedented surge of satisfaction at her unprompted closeness.
Even knowing he had engineered this moment with a cheap trick, his heart still hammered wildly as her soft body pressed flush against his chest.
He lowered his head, inhaling the sweet scent of her hair, and pressed a tender kiss to the top of her head.
Only then did he close his eyes, profoundly pleased.
The next morning.
Bonnie woke up to an overwhelming heat that felt like it was melting her alive.
Not only was she sweltering, but she also felt suffocated.
The blazing warmth pressing against her side was far too close, searing through the thin fabric of her pajamas and making her chest flutter with panic.
