The private nurse lay back down.
Bonnie stepped softly to the edge of the bed, quietly watching her mother.
Jillian's complexion looked slightly better than a few days ago, though she still looked visibly ill, her brow faintly furrowed even in sleep.
Bonnie sat down by the bed, gently taking her mother's hand.
That hand was no longer as warm and strong as she remembered. The skin was gaunt, the palm still bearing the rough calluses of years of hard labor.
For some reason, Bonnie felt a sudden sting in her nose.
Fate had truly been cruel to her.
When she was little, her grandmother passed away.
Later, her grandfather died, her father died, and her family fell apart.
Now, her mother was all she had left.
Jillian was her last remaining family member and her final pillar of support.
So no matter what, she could not let her mother face any more danger.
Bonnie sat by the bed for a long time before reaching out to gently check Jillian's pulse.
Only after confirming that her mother's pulse was steady did she finally feel a sense of relief.
It was late into the night by the time she left the hospital.
When she got back to her apartment, the place was completely silent.
Bonnie still felt unwell. Her stomach churned faintly with acid, and her head was incredibly heavy.
She quickly washed up and went to her bedroom.
Not long after she lay down, her phone buzzed.
It was a text from Quentin: [Why didn't you wait for me? Did you go back by yourself?]
Staring at the words, Bonnie hovered her finger over the screen for a long time but ultimately didn't reply.
She was too exhausted.
Her body ached, and her chest felt tight, a suffocating weight pressing down on her heart.
She closed her eyes, just wanting to fall asleep immediately.
But as she drifted off, a sudden thought jolted her awake.
She hadn't used any contraception.
The moment the thought surfaced, Bonnie was wide awake, her eyes snapping open.
She absolutely could not get pregnant right now, or else everything would spiral completely out of control.
Bonnie threw off the covers and got out of bed.
It was too late; the pharmacies outside were mostly closed.
Standing in the bathroom, she stared at her pale reflection in the mirror. Taking a deep breath, she retrieved her acupuncture kit and began performing an emergency contraceptive treatment on herself.
