I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 135

On Children's Day, Sophie was buried in work until ten o'clock at night.

She had been tempted to call Lydia Langford a few times but held herself back. She needed to learn how to handle these issues independently.

Lydia was seven months pregnant and kept urging Sophie to get up to speed quickly so she could take over more responsibilities during the upcoming maternity leave.

By the time Sophie got downstairs, Gavin was already waiting in his car.

"What did you have for dinner? Do you want to go grab a late-night bite?"

"I grabbed a burger earlier." Sophie rubbed her stomach. She actually was feeling a little hungry.

But looking at the time, it was incredibly late. Any calories she ate now would go straight to her waistline. Better to skip it.

"Let's just go home. I'm exhausted, and I want to get to bed early tonight. I have to brief Ms. Langford tomorrow morning. I've been staring at data reports all day, and all I can see are numbers floating in front of me."

Sophie rubbed her eyes. It wasn't just in front of her eyes; her entire brain felt like a chaotic spreadsheet right now.

Gavin adjusted the passenger seat so she could recline comfortably. "Close your eyes and rest. I'll wake you when we get there."

The drive back was only twenty minutes, but Sophie actually managed to fall asleep.

Exhaustion truly was the ultimate cure for insomnia. When you're pushed to the brink, you can fall asleep sitting up.

When they got back to the apartment, Sarah was still awake, sitting in the living room.

"Mom, why are you still up? Didn't I text you that I'd be working late and not to wait up?" Sophie asked as she took off her shoes.

"Mia's mom showed up at the event today."

"What?" Sophie walked over and sat next to her mom, suddenly realizing this was why Sarah had stayed up.

"What about Gwen..."

Sophie immediately pulled out her phone to see if Gwen had messaged her.

There were no missed calls and no texts. Sophie frowned. "If Melanie was coming, why didn't Jason give us a heads-up? Didn't that put Gwen in an incredibly awkward position?"
