Sophie slept incredibly well. When she woke up, Sarah was already out of bed.
She padded out to the living room and found her mother standing in front of the shoe cabinet in a daze.
"Mom."
Sophie could hardly recognize the woman standing before her. Sarah was wearing a gorgeous purple Vintage Velvet High-Slit Gown that showed off her toned arms, her hair elegantly swept up into a chic chignon. She looked like a stunning leading lady stepping right out of a classic Hollywood film.
Noticing Sophie staring, Sarah looked down at the dress. "Is the slit too high?"
"No, it's perfect. Mom, you look absolutely breathtaking in this. Your legs are so radiant. This is the first time I've ever seen you wear something like this."
In fact, Sophie had never even seen her mother wear a skirt. Even in the sweltering heat of summer, Sarah always wore long pants and shirts with sleeves that reached at least to her elbows.
Her mother was undeniably beautiful, yet she had spent her life trying to blend into the background, dressing in dull, dated clothes and completely swearing off makeup.
Sarah self-consciously smoothed the hem of the gown. "The Riverside Singers are putting on a show at the nursing home for the Midsummer Holiday. This is the custom costume. We have a photoshoot today, so everyone was told to wear theirs."
"It's gorgeous, Mom. You should always dress like this. Hold on, let me do your makeup. I guarantee you'll outshine every other woman in that choir."
With a bright smile, Sophie sprinted to her bedroom to grab her makeup bag.
A knock sounded at the door, and Sarah went to answer it.
Gavin was visibly stunned when he saw her outfit. "Sarah, you look absolutely stunning today."
Hearing Gavin's voice, Sophie jogged out with her makeup bag. "What do you mean 'today'? My mom is always stunning."
Gavin glanced at Sophie. Her eyes were bright and filled with genuine joy; it seemed she and her mother had finally worked through their past.
"Oh, stop it. I'm far too old for this," Sarah murmured.
She nervously tucked a stray hair behind her ear. She was already out of her comfort zone in the tailored gown, and all this praise from the younger generation was making her blush.
"Mom, your figure is incredible. With a little makeup, people would easily believe you're in your thirties." Sophie gently pushed her mother onto the sofa and looked at Gavin. "Right, Gavin?"
"Absolutely. Standing next to each other, you look like sisters."
Gavin observed the two women. Sophie had inherited her mother's striking eyes and smile, as well as her luminous, flawless complexion.
If they had been part of a normal family, Sarah would have been a deeply cherished wife, and Sophie would have been spoiled like a princess her entire life.
Sophie kept it simple, applying light foundation, shaping her brows, and adding a swipe of lipstick. The transformation was remarkable, breathing vibrant life into Sarah's features.
"So beautiful, Mom. The men in the choir won't be able to take their eyes off you."
