I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 147

"What exactly are you planning to do?" Luke demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous rumble.

"After everything she's done, are you seriously still trying to protect her?" Eileen snapped back, her eyes blazing.

Victoria fell into a violent fit of coughing. Luke and Eileen immediately dropped their glare and turned their attention to the older woman.

"Victoria, there has to be a mistake. We need to find out the truth first."

Eileen let out a loud scoff, rolling her eyes so hard she nearly gave herself a headache.

"And what? Ask Harold? He's been lying to my face from the start; why would I believe a word he says now? Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt her. I'll just write her a fat check and make her disappear from his life. Honestly, this is all your fault. If it weren't for you, that trash never would have crossed paths with him to begin with."

Luke squeezed his eyes shut. He always knew Eileen was unhinged, constantly deflecting the blame onto everyone else, but he never realized her mother was the exact same way, only ten times worse.

"She did this on purpose! First she ruins your life, and now she's targeting my father. She's obsessed with destroying our family! If she gets pregnant with my father's child, you—"

"Shut up!"

Luke and Victoria roared the command at the exact same time.

Eileen flinched, instantly silencing herself. She stared at Luke; his eyes were practically burning holes right through her.

"Luke, we cannot let that happen. It would destroy our family, and it would destroy you. Harold is older now; he's losing his mind. You can't just stand by and let him ruin his entire legacy over this. If he had strayed with literally anyone else, I wouldn't drag you into it. But it's her. The scandal would be catastrophic. Imagine the humiliation your own parents would face."

Luke remained dead silent. Every ounce of his willpower was devoted to keeping his raging fury in check.

Watching the muscle twitching erratically at his temple, Victoria knew she had pushed him as far as he could go for one night.

"It's late. Go sleep in the guest room. There's no point in going home and waking your parents. Take some time and think about what the right move is here—for us, and for her."

Luke glanced at his watch. It was nearly 1:00 AM. After working non-stop all weekend, his brain felt like mush, entirely incapable of processing the psychological warfare he had just been subjected to.

He stepped out of the bedroom. The maid had already prepped the guest suite and blearily ushered him inside.

He locked the door, collapsed onto the mattress without even bothering to undress, and stared at the ceiling.

He was exhausted. He desperately needed to shut his mind off and deal with this trainwreck in the morning.

At 8:00 AM, the maid woke him for breakfast.
