Gavin sat down in the seat beside Sophie, holding her hand. Her fingertips were ice-cold, yet her palms were damp with nervous sweat.
Another hour slipped by, and Luke still hadn't been brought out.
Aside from praying, there was absolutely nothing they could do. The waiting was sheer torture.
Harold looked back at them once more, wiping the sweat from his forehead. Ever since the accident, Sophie had refused to speak a single word to him. When he tried to sit closer, Sarah had fiercely ordered him away.
The mother and daughter now looked at him like he was their worst enemy.
Luke was fighting for his life in the operating room, and the culprit was Harold's own daughter. Now, one daughter was injured, the other was sitting in a jail cell, and Harold was left suffering the most.
Victoria called again. The moment she heard the news, she had completely panicked. She was currently standing outside the police station, waiting for her daughter and desperate for updates from the hospital.
"How is Luke doing?" Victoria asked frantically.
Harold walked over to a quiet corner, sounding mentally exhausted. "He's not out yet."
"What are we going to do? Eileen can't go to jail... Can you please talk to Sophie? Tell her to tell the police that she tripped, and Luke was just trying to catch her, and they accidentally got hit by a speeding motorcycle..."
"There are cameras all over the street! Do you think they're just decorations?" Harold hissed, struggling to suppress his rage.
"Then what do we do?! You have to find a way to save Eileen! She didn't mean to do it... You have to convince Sophie to settle this out of court."
"Let's wait until Luke is out of surgery. And it wasn't Sophie who called the cops—it was the motorcyclist. We'll have to deal with him too."
Hearing her sobbing through the receiver, Harold hung up in utter frustration. What was he supposed to do? He wished someone would tell him.
Two more grueling hours passed before Luke was finally wheeled out of the operating room.
"The surgery was a success, but the patient hasn't regained consciousness yet. He requires further observation." The doctor proceeded to explain the postoperative care.
Harold glanced at Sophie, then silently trailed behind the nurses, joining Sophie and Gavin as they wheeled Luke to his hospital room.
Noticing how pale Sophie still looked, Harold felt a pang of guilt. She hadn't eaten anything since noon, and after such a massive shock, she was clearly exhausted.
"Sophie, you two should head back and get some rest. I'll stay here. Luke's parents just landed and are on their way."
Though Harold directed his words at Sophie, his eyes darted toward Sarah.
Sophie shook her head. She couldn't possibly leave until Luke woke up. She looked at Gavin, who was already looking back at her.
