Seeing that Eleanor couldn't handle any more distress, Harold asked Sophie and Gavin to look after her. He then pulled Arthur outside and gave him a sanitized rundown of the events, carefully omitting Victoria and Eileen's paranoid suspicions and their original malicious motive for showing up.
"Eileen acted impulsively, and she's currently at the police station."
Arthur glared at Harold, a fury boiling inside him with nowhere to vent. Why did his son have to get dragged into the crossfire of Harold's warring daughters?
"He told us he was working overtime for the holiday weekend. Why the hell was he here? How did he get mixed up in your family drama?"
"Victoria. Victoria told him to come."
Arthur shot Harold a dark look. His son wouldn't have flown across the country for no reason. He knew Harold was hiding something.
He couldn't care less about Harold's dirty laundry or his newly discovered illegitimate daughter. All he cared about was his son's survival and ensuring the culprit faced severe consequences.
Even if that culprit was Eileen Harper. *Especially* if it was Eileen Harper. Lord knew his son had suffered enough because of her over the years.
Inside the hospital room, aside from Eleanor's muffled sobs, it was dead silent. The others barely dared to breathe.
"When will Luke wake up?" Eleanor looked up at Harold through her tears.
"The doctors said it could be a day or two, or maybe a week or two."
Eleanor clamped a hand over her mouth, her sobs intensifying.
Arthur pulled her into his arms, comforting her softly. "Luke is going to be okay. He survived that critical condition last time; he'll pull through this time too. He's a good boy. God will protect him."
As the sky darkened, the hospital enforced its rule: only one family member could stay overnight.
"Let's go home. We'll come back tomorrow," Gavin whispered gently into Sophie's ear.
Sophie glanced at Luke's still, closed eyes and silently nodded.
Eleanor looked at Sophie's red, tear-streaked eyes, a whirlwind of conflicting emotions in her chest.
She vividly remembered running into this very woman in the hospital room the last time her son had suffered a sudden heart attack.
Had her son secretly flown all the way to Seattle just for her?
Arthur stayed behind to watch over Luke, while Harold escorted Eleanor to a nearby hotel.
"Harold, tell me the truth. What exactly happened?"
Harold found himself repeating the same sanitized story he had told Arthur.
"How could Eileen do such a thing..."
