Deep down, however, Eleanor felt immense gratitude toward Sophie. She knew Luke had woken up entirely because of her.
Eleanor stepped forward and initiated a warm hug. "You're a good girl. Thank you."
"Mrs. Lawrence..." Sophie wasn't used to being embraced by the woman, her body stiffening slightly.
She glanced over at Luke on the gurney. His eyes were open, but his gaze was clouded and unfocused. It wasn't clear if he fully remembered what had happened.
Thankfully, Eleanor didn't hold on for long. Freed from the embrace, Sophie gave Eleanor and Arthur a polite nod and hurried off.
She walked briskly to the parking lot. Gavin was sitting in the driver's seat, scrolling through an academic paper on his tablet.
She tapped on the window. Gavin looked over, set the tablet aside, and unlocked the doors.
Sophie slid into the passenger seat and immediately threw herself into his arms.
"He's awake," she whispered against his ear.
It felt like a massive boulder had finally crashed to the ground, though Gavin's chest still felt tight with the emotional fallout.
He was awake. Sophie could finally find some peace, but it also meant she was about to face a difficult choice.
Gavin sighed silently, gently rubbing her back. After a long moment, he said, "Let's go grab some food. You haven't eaten a proper meal in days."
"Okay." Sophie nodded obediently. As she buckled her seatbelt, she added, "I'm moving forward with prosecuting Eileen Harper. Luke's mother doesn't seem to have any intention of settling out of court either."
"I support you. I don't want her getting a third chance to hurt you."
Sophie hesitated slightly, looking at him. "Do you think I'm being too ruthless?"
"Why would you think that?" Gavin took her hand, wrapping it warmly in his own. He looked at her seriously. "It would be foolish to be so kind that you give her another opportunity to ruin your life. She needs to take responsibility for what she did."
"Mr. Langford's younger brother was the motorcyclist who crashed into us. Both he and his girlfriend were injured, and they're filing charges too. I'm going to the hospital with Lydia this weekend to visit him and coordinate our lawsuits."
Sophie laid out her plans for him.
"Sounds good. I'll pick you up after I finish my overtime."
On Saturday, Sophie returned to the hospital. She brought a fruit basket and headed straight to Kaine Langford's room.
Aside from Lydia and the hired caregiver, there was another young man in the room.
"Officer Danvers." Sophie blinked in surprise.
"Hello."
