The man standing before her was young, with a severe expression and an imposing aura that made Victoria instantly snap her mouth shut.
Victoria scrambled through her memories until it finally clicked. Back in March, when Eileen had been detained, this was the exact cop in charge.
She had privately offered him money back then, but this rookie had kept a stony face, stating they had to follow protocol. He had been incredibly arrogant.
Furious, she had threatened to file a formal complaint against his blatant disrespect. The young man had merely replied with a cold, "Be my guest."
Talk about a small world. Running into him here made it crystal clear whose side he was on.
Victoria glared daggers at Sophie. A vixen was a vixen; she just had to seduce men wherever she went.
"Is it a crime to visit a patient? She can visit him, but I can't? What law says that?"
Victoria refused to back down. This wasn't the police precinct. She wasn't afraid of him.
Daniel gave her a flat look. She was empty-handed, save for her own designer purse, yet she had the audacity to claim she was here for a hospital visit.
"Suit yourself." Daniel stepped aside, letting her pass.
Victoria shot Sophie one last venomous glare before keeping her chin high and marching toward Kaine's room.
"She..." Sophie watched Victoria's retreating back, then looked at Daniel, hesitating. "Officer Danvers, she's not just here to visit Mr. Langford."
"It's fine. Kaine is bored out of his mind anyway. Let him handle her."
After bidding Daniel goodbye, Sophie took the stairs down to the floor where Luke's room was located.
Standing outside his door, she reached into her bag, her fingers wrapping around the decoy ring. She took a deep breath.
She knocked gently. Hearing a faint "Come in," she pushed the door open.
"Mrs. Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence." Sophie nodded respectfully at Eleanor and Arthur.
"Sophie, come on in." Eleanor immediately stood up, warmly offering her the chair right beside Luke's bed.
Sophie had no intention of sitting down. Eleanor's sudden overwhelming warmth made her incredibly uncomfortable.
"I just came to..."
Before she could finish, Eleanor leaned in close and whispered, "Luke doesn't remember how he got hurt. He woke up, talked for a bit, and went back to sleep. He's still very weak."
Sophie's eyes widened in disbelief. Eleanor nodded firmly.
Her gaze shifted to Luke on the bed. He was lying on his side, his eyes tightly shut. He wasn't sleeping peacefully; his brows were furrowed, perhaps from the pain of his injuries.
