Eleanor immediately stood up. "Luke is still recovering. He shouldn't be exhausting himself."
Victoria stared at Luke. The bandages on his head had been removed, revealing that his thick, dark hair had been entirely shaved off. The surgical scars were glaring and horrific to look at.
Lately, she had been too busy strategizing with lawyers, pulling strings at the precinct and the prosecutor's office, and trying to break down Kaine and Sophie individually. It had been quite a while since she had checked on him.
"It's been almost a month, and Luke still looks so gaunt. It breaks my heart. I haven't seen Sophie around at all lately. Considering Luke took the hit for her, it's funny how she's nowhere to be seen."
Eleanor's chest tightened. She felt the exact same way, but she never dared bring it up in front of Luke for fear of breaking his heart.
Victoria was deliberately twisting the knife in her son's wounds.
Eleanor cast an anxious glance at Luke, but his eyes were already shut. Suppressing the rage boiling in her chest, she said, "I won't see you out."
"You must be exhausted. You've looked so drained lately. I'll come back tomorrow to check on him."
With that, Victoria placed a sympathetic hand on Eleanor's shoulder.
"No one wanted this. My poor boy..."
Eleanor felt utterly suffocated. It was a senseless tragedy. Why did it have to be Luke who got hurt?
And the one who caused it was Eileen. Victoria's crocodile tears were utterly revolting to watch.
Eleanor quickly stepped forward, smoothly shrugging Victoria's hand off her shoulder, and pulled the hospital room door wide open to aggressively escort her out.
It took every ounce of Eleanor's self-control not to slam the door in her face.
Victoria was despicable. Her son was lying there broken, and she had the audacity to use those vicious words to trigger him.
Clutching the door handle, Eleanor took several deep breaths, forcing the anger back down before quietly pushing the door shut.
She walked back to the bed. Luke's eyes were still closed.
"Luke, Sophie is just incredibly swamped at work. She told me her boss is going on maternity leave next month, so everything fell onto her shoulders. She's working massive overtime every single day. That's why she hasn't been able to visit."
