On their way back, they had a layover in San Francisco. There was actually a late flight straight back to Seattle that evening, but Gavin wanted to extend the trip by one more day.
"How about we take a day trip to our old college campus?"
San Francisco held a special place in their hearts. It was the city where they first met, and the city where they had ultimately reconnected.
If Sophie hadn't made that business trip two years ago, they might have missed each other entirely. Fate truly worked in mysterious ways.
Sophie nodded. They hadn't been college sweethearts, but they could finally walk those familiar paths as a couple.
That evening, they strolled hand-in-hand through the sprawling campus.
As they walked toward the lecture halls, Gavin pointed out, "We bumped into each other on this exact path."
Stopping by the auditorium, he added, "We had evening study halls in there. I always sat in the sixth row behind you."
Passing the library, Gavin reminisced, "Once, I came to return a book, and you were just walking out with a fresh stack."
Sophie couldn't help but laugh. "We ate in the same dining hall for two years. If you count all of that, we had these 'fateful encounters' with half the student body."
"Yes, but we're the only ones who ended up together."
Gavin flashed a smug grin. "The key ingredient was my relentless persistence."
"You're right. You're the best. Absolutely unparalleled."
They were standing beneath the shade of a massive oak tree. Sophie went on her tiptoes and pressed a quick, sweet kiss to his cheek.
It was true. She really did have to thank Gavin for ensuring they didn't just become two alumni passing like ships in the night.
They flew out of San Francisco the next day, immediately plunging back into the corporate grind.
Stepping into the office, Sophie felt like she had plummeted from the clouds straight back to reality. It was time to work, earn a living, and deal with everyday life.
The abrupt shift only made the memories of their two-week romantic escape feel even more precious.
Right before clocking out, Gavin called. "I'm going to have to work late today. The backlog is insane."
Sophie gave him the exact same answer, and they both burst out laughing over the line.
"How was your first day back?" Gavin asked, his voice low and intimate.
"Not bad, but it makes the honeymoon feel like a dream. Reality hit me like a ton of bricks."
"Did you miss me?" he murmured.
Sophie was about to tease him about being apart for barely eight hours when she heard a young man's voice in the background: "Dr. Gilmore, could you take a look at this data set? Something seems off."
