I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 245

At five past eight in the morning, Harold Harper received a call from Gavin Gilmore, congratulating him on becoming a grandfather.

"Can I come see them?" he asked Gavin over the phone.

Other fathers-in-law held a commanding presence in front of their sons-in-law, but Harold kept his posture incredibly humble in front of his.

"Sophie asked me to let you know," Gavin answered tactfully, leaving it up to Harold to decide whether or not to make the trip.

Harold didn't hesitate. The fact that his daughter wanted him informed meant she wanted him there.

He immediately bought the earliest flight out, rushing to Seattle to see his daughter and his new grandson. And, of course, the most important person of all—his daughter's mother.

The door to Sophie's hospital room was open. As Harold stepped inside, he saw Sarah holding the baby by the bed, humming softly.

She was singing a lullaby from their hometown. Her voice was light and tender, washing over his heart like a gentle stream.

Sarah had a beautiful voice. Back when they were in high school, Ella Fitzgerald's music had just become popular, and Sarah could mimic her perfectly.

Every night, on their bike rides home after evening study sessions, Sarah would sing softly, just for him.

The warm winter sunlight cast an orange glow over Sarah. She had her head bowed, gazing lovingly at the baby in her arms. It vividly reminded Harold of how she used to sit quietly next to him doing homework back in high school.

He didn't dare move, terrified that the slightest sound would shatter this tranquil, beautiful moment. Even more, he feared that if Sarah saw him, her face would turn to ice and she would kick him out.

But as if by some telepathic connection, Sarah sensed his gaze on her and turned around.

Harold's heart leaped into his throat. Just as he was scrambling for something to say, Sarah tilted her chin toward Sophie's bed and said, "Go see Sophie first."

"Okay," Harold eagerly agreed.

Sarah hadn't kicked him out. Whether it was because Sophie had just given birth or because of the angelic baby in the room, it was enough to leave Harold overwhelmed with emotion.

Gavin stood up, offering Harold the seat next to Sophie.

Looking at the exhausted but happy smile on Sophie's face, Harold felt a swell of emotion, yet words failed him.

He raised a hand, wanting to affectionately pat Sophie's head, but ultimately pulled his fingers back.

He was afraid his abrupt affection would make Sophie uncomfortable.

With both Sophie and Sarah, it was the same. He desperately wanted to be close to them, yet he was terrified of overstepping and upsetting them.

He stole another glance at Sarah. By now, she had lowered her head again, soothing the little baby in her arms.
