I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 58

Sophie gave the most concise summary of the myth she could manage.

"What does that even mean? Does he have a terminal illness and he's dying? Or does he mean you're the temptation he can never have?"

Sophie shook her head. She didn't understand it either.

He had never explained any of this to her. If he genuinely wanted to build a life with her, shouldn't they have faced those obstacles together as a team?

Instead, he had chosen Eileen. Perhaps Eileen was the only one who could truly save him.

"None of it matters anymore. He and Eileen are getting married in March."

Sophie's voice was perfectly calm. Every last ounce of her emotional turmoil had been exhausted during her confrontation with Luke.

She had accepted reality. He had made the choice he needed to make, and she needed to start building her own future.

"This is way too complicated. I absolutely do not get it."

Gwen scratched her head. Why did dating have to be so exhausting? Just watching Sophie and Luke was completely draining.

"Gavin is definitely the better choice. Isn't the whole point of dating just to be happy?"

Right on cue, Gavin appeared in the doorway, shooting Gwen and Sophie a bright smile. "Talking behind my back?"

"Speak of the devil! I was just telling Sophie how great you are."

Gwen's reflexes were razor-sharp, smoothly deflecting the situation.

"Well, since you're singing my praises, I guess I should step up my game and peel this apple for you."

Gavin washed his hands and pulled out the Swiss Army knife Sophie had gifted him to peel the apple.

When he finished, the peel rested loosely around the fruit. With a gentle flick of his wrist, the unbroken peel cascaded onto the table in a long, continuous, serpentine ribbon.

"Wow, you've got skills," Gwen laughed.

Gavin chuckled. He picked up an orange, rolled it firmly across the table to loosen the rind, and then peeled it perfectly with his bare hands, handing the flawless fruit to Sophie.

His method for peeling oranges was exactly the same as hers. Sophie broke into a warm smile. These shared little quirks brought a deep, comforting sense of intimacy.

Sophie pulled off a slice of the orange and popped it into Gavin's mouth.

She was genuinely determined to start a new life, and she was genuinely committed to building this new relationship. Since she had said yes to Gavin, she was going to give it her all to ensure he felt entirely secure.

On the final day of the holiday, Sophie insisted on seeing Gavin off at the train station.

Truthfully, she felt like a pretty terrible girlfriend. He had spent the entire trip rushing back and forth, and she hadn't managed to pick him up or drop him off even once.

"What am I going to do? I really don't want to leave."

The passengers were already lining up to board, but Gavin had his arms wrapped tightly around her, completely unwilling to let go.
