On the last weekend of January, Sophie and Sarah finally moved into their new house.
Jason Jenkins brought Mia over to celebrate their housewarming.
The second they stepped through the door, Mia dramatically threw her hands up. "Auntie Sophie's new house is so pretty!"
In reality, the decor was very simple and cozy. Over the past few weeks, while traveling for work, Sophie had picked up various trinkets and displayed them on the living room shelves, which immediately captivated Mia's attention.
Mia shoved a bouquet of fresh flowers into Sophie's hands and immediately bolted over to inspect the decorations.
Sophie let her mother entertain Jason and Mia while she retreated to the kitchen to start cooking.
Before long, she had whipped up a full table of absolutely mouthwatering dishes.
"Auntie Sophie, this crispy lemon shrimp is amazing! Grandma Sarah, can we have this again tomorrow?" Mia raved between bites.
"I have no idea how to make this," Sarah confessed, picking up a piece of shrimp to study it.
"I'm genuinely surprised. Your cooking is even better than hers, and the seafood bisque is fantastic," Jason commented with a warm, appreciative smile.
"I took a few classes. Honestly, I didn't get many chances to cook it."
Sophie bit down on her chopsticks. Thinking back, she had been such a fool. She had specifically taken cooking classes just for him, but he was barely ever home for dinner.
After their guests left and the mother-daughter duo finished cleaning up, Sarah unwrapped the Japanese dining set Jason had brought as a gift.
"These are stunning. This set couldn't have been cheap, right?"
Sophie glanced at the brand on the box. "No, it wasn't cheap."
"Sophie."
Hearing the sudden shift in her mother's tone, Sophie looked up. "What's wrong?"
"What do you think of Jason?"
"I'm not lying. He's very real. He works in San Francisco right now. That date I went on for Christmas? It was with him. He was away on business in Denver but flew all the way back just to spend the holiday with me."
"Wait... is it that man?" Sarah asked hesitantly.
"No!" Sophie quickly clarified. "I met him on my last business trip to San Francisco. He's from my university; we ran into each other a few times back in school."
"Is he younger than you?"
"Yeah. Three years younger."
Sarah fell silent for a long moment before finally speaking. "They say marrying a younger man is a blessing, but a woman's youth fades faster than a man's. A boy that young might not have his heart set yet. He might not be mature enough."
"Mom, we just started dating. I'm really happy right now, and I feel completely secure with him."
Sarah wanted to say more, but seeing how relaxed and content Sophie looked, she swallowed the words back down.
She didn't want to crush her daughter's happiness, but a heavy fear lingered in her mind. If that young man ever found out that Sophie had suffered a miscarriage in the past, would he still treat her with the same unconditional love?
