Sophie felt her heart melt. She rested her cheek against his shoulder. "I also smell orange-flavored chewing gum."
"Yeah, popped a piece right before I got off."
Gavin looked slightly embarrassed that his little trick had been exposed. He gently tapped Sophie's nose. "You've got a nose like a bloodhound."
"Are you comparing me to a dog?"
Sophie gave Gavin's chest a light, playful shove, her voice and mannerisms completely betraying her affectionate, teasing mood.
Sophie had already booked a hotel for Gavin, just a short walk from her apartment.
After dropping off his luggage and washing his face, Gavin grabbed Sophie's hand, eager to find food.
"I'm starving. Let's get something amazing for lunch." Gavin hugged her from behind, gently nudging her forward with every step.
"Let's just grab something light. My mom wants to cook you dinner tonight," Sophie dropped the bomb as casually as possible.
The man behind her froze instantly. He didn't say a word for a long time.
Sophie's stomach dropped. She turned around, fully intending to say she was just joking.
But Gavin spoke first. "What do I do? I'm kind of nervous." He looked at her with total sincerity.
"My mom isn't a monster. You're just meeting her, don't overthink it," Sophie chuckled.
Gavin immediately scrapped his plans for a huge lunch and a movie. They grabbed a quick bite at a nearby café, and then he dragged Sophie to the biggest shopping center in the area.
Sophie watched as Gavin intensely scoured the gift section, constantly asking her, "What does your mom like? Do you think this is good?"
"Good memory. You waited for me right there on Christmas Eve."
Sophie pointed to a nearby apartment complex. The building she lived in was incredibly close to Jason's, just a ten-minute walk across a single street.
"Of course I have a good memory. I picked you out of the crowd on the very first day of freshman orientation."
Laughing and chatting, they arrived at Sophie's door. As she pulled out her keys, she heard Gavin take a massive, shaky breath beside her.
"Relax, my mom is easy to get along with," Sophie whispered.
She opened the door, but it was Mia who bounced over, calling out cheerfully, "Sophie!"
Sophie peered into the living room in surprise. Her mother and Jason Jenkins were sitting comfortably on the sofa, deep in conversation.
