Sophie greeted Mia and called out toward the living room, "Mom, Gavin is here."
Sarah stood up to welcome him, and Jason immediately followed suit.
Gavin set his gifts down by the entryway and politely greeted Sarah.
Sophie then introduced Gavin and Jason to each other.
Jason's gaze lingered on Gavin for a brief moment before he turned to Sarah with an apologetic expression. "Sarah, I had no idea you were having company today. Mia and I won't intrude any longer."
"Oh, don't be silly, dinner is almost ready. You can't leave now. It's the holidays—the more, the merrier."
Mia grabbed the hem of Jason's shirt and whined, "I don't want to go! I want to eat Sophie's Zesty Lemon Shrimp. Sarah promised me Sophie would make it as soon as she got back."
"I already prepped all the ingredients. We can't break a promise to a child. Please, stay for dinner," Sarah urged Jason again.
Jason looked over at Sophie, who quickly added, "It's totally fine. Stay and eat."
Mia threw her arms around Sophie's legs, turning on the charm.
"Sophie, my tummy is rumbling so much! Daddy's cooking is boring, and I missed your yummy food."
Sophie pinched Mia's chubby little cheek. "Alright, alright. I'll make it right now for our little princess."
She took Gavin's hand, guiding him to the sofa, and whispered, "Keep my mom company for a bit. I need to get started in the kitchen."
Gavin offered her a reassuring smile, fully bracing himself for the mother-in-law interrogation.
Through the glass kitchen door, Sophie noticed that her mother wasn't really engaging with Gavin; instead, she was engrossed in a conversation with Jason.
Feeling a flash of annoyance, Sophie leaned out and called, "Mom, come help me for a second."
When Sarah stepped into the kitchen, Sophie lowered her voice, visibly frustrated. "Mom, what are you doing? You insisted he come over, and now you're acting like this."
"Acting like what? You told me not to interrogate him, so what am I supposed to say the first time I meet him? Mr. Jenkins came over to pay a holiday visit. I couldn't just ignore him."
"You knew Gavin was coming today. Why did you invite Mr. Jenkins over?"
"I didn't invite him. Mia was begging to come over. What was I supposed to do, kick them out?" Sarah sounded equally annoyed. Sophie tilted her head back and sighed heavily. "This is so awkward."
"What's so awkward about it? If he can't handle a simple dinner party without throwing a fit, how is he going to handle real problems down the line?"
Sophie decided to drop the argument. Was her mother secretly convinced that just because she was three years older than Gavin, he was bound to abandon her at the first sign of trouble?
Sophie brought the dishes out and invited everyone to the table.
