I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 77

But the Harpers were far more relentless than Sophie could have ever imagined.

That afternoon, yet another visitor showed up. It was Eileen's mother, Victoria Harper.

They went to the exact same coffee shop where Eileen had splashed her with the industrial bleach.

"Right here, at this very table. Your daughter threw industrial bleach at my face. I barely managed to block it with my arms. I should be thanking my lucky stars I'm not blind. If you were in my shoes, would you forgive her so easily?"

"Yes, she was wrong. And we are more than willing to compensate you for her mistake. You have parents too; you should understand how desperate a mother can be."

Victoria tried to play the emotional card, completely mirroring her husband's tactics.

"If I ever did something so heinous, my mother would be the first one to drag me to the police station. You have to take responsibility for your own actions."

The Harpers had spouted these exact same excuses too many times.

Victoria's patience finally snapped. "Just spit it out. How much money will it take for you to sign?"

Sophie glared at her, letting out a sharp, cynical laugh. "And what happens after I take the money? You turn around and sue me for extortion?"

Victoria froze. Sophie knew instantly that she had hit the nail on the head.

From the moment she walked in, the older woman's eyes had been dripping with unadulterated disdain.

She had never intended to negotiate in good faith. She had dug a trap, waiting for Sophie to jump right in.

"You're so young. How can your mind be so twisted and vicious? I never even thought of that."

Seeing right through her pathetic attempt at a cover-up, Sophie just sneered.

"What did you want from Luke anyway? You just wanted his money. Did he ever publicly claim you? He's only ever going to be Eileen's husband. He'll only ever be a Harper son-in-law."

Victoria was completely losing her mind with rage.

"We've watched Luke grow up since he was a boy. I don't know what kind of cheap, seductress tricks you used, but don't even dream of stealing my daughter's fiancé."

At this point, the conversation was completely dead.

Sophie pulled a napkin from the dispenser and wiped her face. "Mrs. Harper, you've been spitting on me since you sat down. Sadly, I don't have enough saliva to spit back."

She stood up and grabbed her purse. As the strap slid off her shoulder, the heavy bag knocked against the coffee cup on the table. She watched coolly as the dark liquid cascaded off the edge, splashing violently across Victoria's expensive dress. She offered a mocking, apologetic smile.

"Oops. I am so sorry. If I purposely threw my coffee at you, I might get detained just like your daughter. But since it was just a clumsy accident, you'll just have to deal with it."

"You..." Victoria pointed a trembling finger at Sophie, who spun on her heel and strutted out without looking back.

"What kind of uncultured trash did Luke get himself mixed up with?!"

Victoria directed all her fury at her husband when they met up later. "You couldn't even handle a single, arrogant brat! If she's this impossible to talk to, what about her parents? Are they just as unreasonable?"

Harold remained silent. He accompanied his wife back to the police station to visit their daughter. Seeing Eileen locked up and weeping hysterically felt like a knife twisting in his gut.
